Maine Celtics News Release
Portland - December 28, 2014 - The Maine Red Claws (12-3), presented by Unum, fell to the Canton Charge 96-95 in a nail-biting finish at the Portland Expo this afternoon. Canton's (10-7) win makes it the second win against the Red Claws this season, snapping the Red Claws seven game home winning streak and eight game total win streak. Both streaks were the longest in franchise history.
Brandon Paul (20 points, 1 assist) made a driving layup in the final seconds to lift the Charge to victory. Tim Frazier had a chance to win it for Maine, but his three pointer at the buzzer fell short.
The first quarter featured back-to-back scoring from both teams with the lead changing three separate times in the quarter. James Young (15 points, 1 assist), on assignment from the Boston Celtics, exploded in the first half with 10 of his 15 points going 4-6 from the field and 3-6 on 3 point attempts. Young scored back-to-back points for the Red Claws on an alley-oop pass from Tim Frazier followed by a solo steal finishing with the dunk.
Chris Babb (16 points, 3 assists) was one of six Red Claws to shoot double digits leading the team in scoring this evening. Also scoring in double digits for the Red Claws were James Young (15 points, 1 assist), Tim Frazier (15 points, 8 assists), Omari Johnson (14 points, 2 assists), Andre Stringer (12 points, 1 assist), and Christian Watford (11 points, 2 assists). Ten of Babb's 16 points were scored in a strong second quarter performance that gave the Red Claws the lead heading in the second half. Babb was assisted by Omari Johnson's (14 points, 2 assists) strong second quarter performance. Johnson shot 100% from the field and three point line in the second quarter.
The Red Claws 31-22 lead at the end of the third quarter was quickly closed by an early Canton scoring spree led by Brandon Paul and Stephen Holt. With the Red Claws down by one points, Andre Stringer hit a clutch three pointer to regain the lead with 5:36 remaining in the game. The lead went back and forth four times during the fourth quarter until the Brandon Paul hit a layup with 0:06 remaining in the game. Frazier made a final push up the court in the last 0:06 but could not capitalize on a three point attempt as time expired.
Stephen Holt (23 points, 4 assists) led all scorers and was one of four Canton players to shoot double digits. Paul followed Holt's success with a strong first quarter performance hitting 11 of his 20 points in the first quarter. Also scoring in double digits for the Charge were Arinze Onauku (17 points, 1 assist) and Michael Dunigan (15 points, 2 assists).
The Red Claws are back in action at the Portland Expo on Wednesday, December 31st at 1:00pm as they take on Dwight Powell and the Texas Legends.
