Carolina Mudcats News Release
Salem, Va. - Logan Vick cracked his first home run of the season, but the eighth inning blast wasn't enough as the Salem Red Sox edged the Carolina Mudcats 5-3 on Friday night at LewisGale Field. The Red Sox (19-14) have won three straight against the Mudcats (16-15) and seven of the last nine in the Roanoke Valley.
D.J. Brown (2-2) took his second straight defeat after allowing five runs on six hits over five innings. Luis Diaz (3-3) held the Mudcats to two runs despite seven hits across six innings for the win and Kyle Martin picked up his third save with a scoreless ninth.
For the second straight night, the Mudcats struggled to find a hit with runners in scoring position. Jeremy Lucas singled in the second and moved to second on a wild pitch. Anthony Gallas lined a hit to left, moving Lucas to third, but a double play stifled the rally as Lucas scored for a 1-0 lead.
Brown set down the Sox in order through the first three innings before Salem punched through in the third. Tim Roberson drove a fly ball that one-hopped the wall in center field to plate two runs and later scored on a hit by Anuery Tavarez for a 3-1 lead.
Jerrud Sabourin started a comeback in the fifth on a line-drive single to center. Torsten Boss laced a double off the wall in left. Kevin Heller's throw from the corner sailed past his cut-off man and Sabourin scored on the error. With the tying run 90 feet from home, Roberts chopped a bouncer to first. Boss broke towards home, but was thrown out by Roberson to end the threat.
Salem made it 5-2 in the sixth on consecutive sacrifice flies by Carson Blair and Tavarez. Vick's eighth-inning shot off the light pole beyond the right field wall drew the Mudcats as close as they would get.
Carolina must win the next two to salvage a series split at LewisGale Field. Saturday's action with the Red Sox gets underway at 6:05 p.m. Right-hander Michael Peoples (1-2, 6.04) takes the mound against Salem's Corey Littrell (2-1, 2.20).
The Mudcats return home to host the Lynchburg Hillcats and the Salem Red Sox on May 12. The seven-game homestand features Dollar Dog Night, Thirsty Day, Fireworks Friday and Kids Run the Bases presented by Amerigas.
