Loons Offense Erupts... Like a Geyser

FORT WAYNE, IN - The Great Lakes Loons used a 15-hit attack and benefited from six Fort Wayne errors to take down the home team, 15-4, in day baseball Wednesday.

The Loons jumped out for four runs in the first inning and never trailed in the contest. They tallied five runs in both the fifth and seventh innings.

The most interesting and action, surprisingly, involved plumbing and came in the top of the fifth inning. Joey Curletta hit a foul fly down the first base line. Fernando Perez chased after it and inadvertently kicked a sprinkler head, causing a steady stream of water to spew 20 feet in the air. The water was eventually stopped and the field dried adequately for play but not before an 18-minute delay.

Every Loons starter scored at least one run. Dillon Moyer scored four times with three hits and 2 RBIs. Kyle Farmer had three hits - two doubles - with 3 RBIs and two runs. Malcolm Holland recorded two hits, two RBIs and stole his 21st base of April, setting a new franchise monthly stolen base record, surpassing Dee Gordon's May 2009 total. Curletta notched three hits and scored twice. Paul Hoenecke drove in three with two hits.

Fort Wayne - currently leading all of Minor League Baseball in errors - continued their run of porous defense with six more miscues to bring their season total to 55 in 24 games. Franchy Cordero committed three of the errors to bring his season total to 18 in 20 defensive appearances. Just eight of the Loons' 15 runs were earned.

Despite long breaks between innings, Loons starter Greg Harris (2-2) was solid, allowing just three hits and one run in his five innings to win his second game of the year. Scott Barlow entered in relief and pitched the final four frames to record his first career save. Barlow allowed a three-run home run to Perez in his first inning of relief but was not scored upon in his final three.

Fort Wayne used five pitchers, including center fielder Ronnie Richardson, who hurled a perfect ninth inning in his second "mop-up" assignment.

The Loons and TinCaps conclude their four-game series Thursday night at 7:05pm. Right-hander Jonathan Martinez (3-2, 3.41 ERA) matches up against righty Coby Cowgill (1-0, 0.00). The game will be broadcast live on ESPN 100.9-FM and ESPN1009.com.
