Robson, Lugnuts deal Dayton pair of defeats

DAYTON, OH - The Lansing Lugnuts (12-13) took a pair of games from the first place Dayton Dragons (16-9) on Wednesday night at Fifth Third Field, taking the opening completion game, 7-5, with a 15-hit assault, before winning the nightcap, 3-1, on the shoulders of pitcher Tom Robson.

With the results, Lansing has now won eight of its last 10 games and moved within a game of evening its record on the season.

The Lugs began the completion of Tuesday night's suspended game in the fourth inning with a 4-2 lead, but the Dragons knotted the game up with a pair of runs on RBI singles by Humberto Valor and Carlton Daal.

Lansing reclaimed the lead in the fifth inning when Derrick Loveless drove in L.B. Dantzler with a single, putting the Lugnuts ahead 5-4.

D.J. Davis extended the lead in the six with a two-run home run to right field, his second long ball of the season. That swing proved to be the winning margin.

Phil Kish (Win, 2-0) pitched four scoreless innings of relief, allowing on run on three hits while striking out four Dragons.

Dayton pitcher Zack Weiss (Loss, 1-1) surrendered runs for the first time in 2014, allowing three Lugnuts to cross the plate in his three innings of relief work.

Lugs designated hitter Justin Atkinson finished the game 5-for-5 with four singles and a double.

In the second game of the night, shortened to seven innings, 20-year-old Lansing right-hander Robson (Win, 1-3) enjoyed his best outing of the year, tossing six innings and allowing just one run on three hits with a walk and four strikeouts.

The Lugnuts pulled ahead in the top of the first inning on a throwing error by Dayton shortstop Carlton Daal, allowing Jason Leblebijian to score, though Dayton immediately tied the score on a Phillip Ervin sacrifice fly.

In the fourth, Loveless brought Nay across to score on a groundout, and Atkinson followed with another RBI groundout to score Dantzer and put the Lugnuts ahead for good, 3-1.

Griffin Murphy (Save, 2) recorded the final three outs around a two-out single to close out the victory.

Dayton starter Nick Travieso (Loss, 3-1) worked a complete game in the losing effort, allowing four hits and three runs (two earned) while striking out five Lugnuts.

The Lugnuts and Dragons close out the four-game set on Thursday night at Fifth Third Field. Right-hander Alberto Tirado (0-0, 3.60) will start on the mound for Lansing, with two-time National League All-Star Aroldis Chapman scheduled to start for Dayton in his first rehab appearance since being hit in the face with a line drive during a Spring Training game.

Lansing returns to Cooley Law School Stadium on Friday, May 2nd, opening a six-game homestand with the first Flat Screen Friday, presented by Auto-Owners Insurance, and featuring postgame LAFCU Fireworks. Saturday is Eat-A-Palooza! presented by Gordon Food Service, with $19 admission providing all-you-can-eat food inside the ballpark.
