Chiefs Fall in Pitcher's Duel

Beloit, WI- The Peoria Chiefs were held to just three hits and fell to the Beloit Snappers 3-1 Wednesday night in a frigid pitcher's duel. The loss drops the Chiefs to 15-9, their best April since 2003, with the two teams finishing the series at 11:00 a.m. Thursday
The Chiefs started the game with a single from C.J. McElroy Jr. but left him at third base to end the inning. Beloit jumped out to an early lead as Herschel Powell double off Arturo Reyes and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Jaycob Brugman in the bottom of the first.
The game stayed 1-0 until the fifth when Peoria's Jimmy Bosco led off the inning with an opposite field home run to tie the game. The homer was just the third hit allowed by Beloit starter Dylan Covey and the first home run for Bosco this season. The Chiefs would not get another hit for the rest of the game.
Beloit took the lead against Reyes in the sixth as B.A. Vollmuth and Tyler Marincov connected for doubles. The Snappers added an insurance run in the eighth when Marincov homered off reliever Chris Perry.
"Reyes pitched extremely well," said Chiefs manager Joe Kruzel. "He pitched well and kept us in the game. Covey mixed pitches well, kept our guys off balance. You gotta tip our hat to him."
Despite earning a quality start, Reyes (2-2) took the loss. He allowed two runs on six hits over six innings while walking two and striking out five. Perry allowed one run over two innings with two walks and three strikeouts.
"Bosco gave us a lift with the home run," said Kruzel. "We had trouble getting guys on and stringing good at-bats together but we have a chance to win the series tomorrow.
