Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
Fort Wayne, IN - There were errors. There was a recalcitrant water spigot. And there were more errors. Wednesday afternoon the Fort Wayne TinCaps had more errors than runs in a 15-4 drubbing at the hands of the Great Lakes Loons. Fort Wayne committed a season-high-tying six errors in their most lopsided loss of the season.
Fort Wayne (10-15) committed three errors in the first inning with Pete Kelich (0-3) on the mound, leading to four Great Lakes (15-11) runs. The Loons scored once in the fourth, five times in the fifth, and five more times again in the seventh, and tallied 15 hits on the afternoon. Of the 15 runs, six of them were unearned.
Perhaps the lightest moment of the afternoon came in the top of the fifth inning when the Loons' Joey Curletta hit a pop-foul down the right field line, sending Fernando Perez into a chase toward the boundary. Perez, jolting from first, stepped on a hose connection at the base of the TinCaps bullpen, and sent water splurting into the air. The geyser-like condition halted the game for 18 minutes while the water was controlled and the area surrounding the bullpen was rehabilitated to playing shape.
The TinCaps entered the day leading Minor League Baseball with 49 errors, and with three from Franchy Cordero, two from Jose Carlos Urena, and one from Henry Charles, they upped their total to 55, now averaging more than two per game through 25 games.
Three of Fort Wayne's four runs came in the sixth inning on a three-run home run off the bat of Fernando Perez. It was his second home run of the season, and the second in as many days for the team.
An odd day was capped off with Ronnie Richardson, the day's starting centerfielder, on the mound for the second time in 13 days. Richardson pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning, using just eight pitches to retire the side. He had also pitched on April 17th in a win against Peoria. Despite having a position player take the mound twice this year, the TinCaps are second within the farm system as they trail the El Paso Chihuahuas, the Padres Triple-A affiliate, which has sent a position player to the mound three times this season.
The Loons are 8-3 against Fort Wayne this year, and the TinCaps will look to add to their win total versus the Dodgers' affiliate Thursday evening at 7:05. The scheduled starters are Coby Cowgill for Fort Wayne and Jonathan Martinez for Great Lakes. The game can be seen on XFINITY 81 and heard on The Fan 1380 and TheFanFortWayne.com.
