Rockford Aviators News Release
O'Fallon, Mo. - The Rockford Aviators (6-21), presented by Pearson, got a quality start from Drew Rucinski Tuesday, but had a tough time scoring in a 3-1 loss to the River City Rascals (10-17).
Rockford did get on the scoreboard first with an unearned run in the third inning. Eric Bainer led off with a walk. Ray Delvalle then laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Bainer to second with one out. Ted Obregon then hit a ground ball to second that Rascals' infielder Will Block couldn't handle. The ball bounced off of Block into center field, allowing Bainer to score from second to put the Aviators up 1-0.
River City tied the game in the fourth. Evan Crawford hit a leadoff double and went to third on a flyout to right by Phil Wunderlich. Jake Atwell then brought Crawford home on a sacrifice fly to left field and the game was tied at 1 after four innings.
River City broke the 1-1 tie in the bottom of the eighth. With one out, Curran Redal and Evan Crawford both walked. Wunderlich collected an RBI single to right field and then Atwell picked up his second RBI on his second sacrifice fly of the game. The Rascals led 3-1 after eight.
Rascals closer Gabe Shaw gave up two hits to start the ninth, but retired the next three batters to pick up his fifth save of the season. Reliever Nick Kennedy pitched a scoreless eighth and collected the win for River City.
Drew Rucinski started for Rockford and was good. The right-hander pitched 7.1 innings and allwed just two runs on four hits, struck out three and walked three. Rucinski was the hard-luck loser, bringing his season record to 1-5.
The two teams will play again tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. Fans can listen to the game on 100.5 NTA-FM or online at rockfordaviators.com.
