Power Complete First Half of Season with Loss, but Winning Record

(Greensboro, NC- June 16, 2013)- The West Virginia Power lost Sunday afternoon by a 7-5 final to the Greensboro Grasshoppers at NewBridge Bank Park. With the loss, the Power finished the first half of the 2013 season with a 37-33 record.

In the top of the third, Barrett Barnes and Ashley Ponce each reached on back-to-back singles. After a walked to D.J. Crumlich loaded the bases, Eric Wood hit an 0-2 pitch from Greensboro starter Mason Hope over the left-center wall for a 4-1 lead. Wood's home run was West Virginia's first grand slam this season.

The Grasshoppers recaptured the lead in the bottom of the third, scoring four runs on four hits, a hit batter, and two errors for a 5-4 lead. The Power evened the score in the top of the fifth without a base hit. Wood, Raul Fortunato, and Max Moroff each drew walks. Greensboro brought in reliever Chipper Smith, who then walked Kawika Emsley-Pai to bring in Wood for a tie game.

In the fifth, the Grasshoppers scored twice on three hits and two Power errors to go ahead for good.

Rodriguez (5-5) allowed all seven runs, though only two were earned, over four and two-thirds in the loss. Chipper Smith pitched three and two-thirds of scoreless relief for the win before Frankie Reed notched his seventh save.

The South Atlantic League All-Star break begins on June 17 with the mid-summer classic to be play on June 18 at Lakewood's FirstEnergy Park.
