Augusta Ends Series with 2-1 over RiverDogs

CHARLESTON, SC - The Augusta GreenJackets beat the Charleston RiverDogs 2-1 on the strength of a great pitching performance from three pitchers on Sunday in South Atlantic League play at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park in front of 4,306 fans.

The RiverDogs are now 39-29 on the season and finish the first half in second place in the Southern Division. The GreenJackets now move to 38-31 on the season and finish the first half in fourth place in the Southern Division.

Both offenses struggled as the pitching was strong throughout the game. Mason McVay started on the mound for Augusta. In two innings of work he allowed the only Charleston run on three hits and also recorded three strikeouts. He was relieved by Matt Lujan who surrendered just one hit and struck out six batters in five innings of relief work. Brandon Farley (4-3) entered the game in the eighth inning and picked up the win for Augusta. In his two innings of work he allowed no runs on two hits and struck out one batter.

Charleston took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. After singling to right field and advancing to third on singles by Greg Bird (2-4) and Peter O'Brien, Cito Culver scored the game's first run on an error by shortstop Alberto Robles.

The GreenJackets tied the game in the fourth inning. Andrew Cain (2-4) reached on an infield single, stole second, advanced to third on an error and then scored on a fielder's choice.

In the top of the eighth inning, Augusta took the lead and would not look back. With two out, Ben Turner drew a walk to keep the inning alive. He scored on the next play on a line drive to right center field off the bat of Joseph Rapp (2-4).

Dietrich Enns was tagged with the loss for the RiverDogs. He pitched four innings, allowed one unearned run on two hits, and recorded six strikeouts. Cesar Vargas was the starting pitcher for Charleston. In five innings of work he allowed one run on two hits and struck out five batters.

BALLPARK FUN: Children enjoyed a pregame catch on the field with their father's before the game on a Father's Day.

COMING UP: The RiverDogs will have three days off for the All-Star break. Five RiverDogs were selected to participate in the game which will be played in Lakewood, NJ on Tuesday. They will then travel to Rome, GA to take on the Drive in a four-game series. They return home Thursday, June 27 for a four-game series with the Hickory Crawdads.
