Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
LOUISVILLE, KY. -- Pawtucket third baseman Brandon Snyder kept the Red Sox close with his glove before lifting them to the lead with his bat in Saturday's 6-5 victory over the Louisville Bats before an announced crowd of 10,017 at Louisville Slugger Field.
With one out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth inning of a 4-4 tie, Snyder made a diving backhanded stop on a sharp grounder by Emmanuel Burriss. Although the bouncer put Louisville ahead, scoring Nevin Ashley, Snyder's effort prevented any additional runs from a potential extra-base hit.
Immediately thereafter, Burriss was caught stealing to the end inning with the difference still a single run.
Snyder then came up in the top of the seventh for a two-out at-bat opposite reliever Kevin Whelan. With Ryan Lavarnway aboard at second, Snyder drilled a 2-2 pitch to left field for his eighth homer and a 6-5 PawSox lead. Snyder has now delivered four RBI in the series, giving him 30 overall.
Facing Louisville's Greg Reynolds, a first-year member of the Cincinnati Reds organization who was the second overall draft choice by the Colorado Rockies in 2006, Pawtucket took a big lead early. Reynolds entered with a 4-0 record and 2.88 ERA, but after escaping a first-inning threat fell behind in the second.
Justin Henry ignited the threat with a bunt single, followed by singles from Ronald Bermudez and Brock Holt. Jeremy Hazelbaker's RBI fielder's choice, accompanied by an error on shortstop Kristopher Negron, gave the Sox a 1-0 lead.
With one out, Drew Sutton laced a double into the right-field corner to score Bermudez, Holt and Hazelbaker, expanding the advantage to 4-0.
But the Bats rebutted in the next half inning. Mike Hessman launched his 10th homer of the season and 374th of his minor league career off a knuckle ball from Steven Wright. Following a walk and three straight singles, including RBI for Josh Fellhauer and Billy Hamilton, Louisville closed to within 4-3.
The inning ended on a diving catch by Bermudez in center field, one of several outstanding defensive plays by Pawtucket.
Of course, another was Snyder's sixth-inning stop on Burriss's ground ball, two batters after Graham Godfrey relieved Wright.
Godfrey (W, 3-3), who totaled 2 1/3 innings, gave way to lefty Ryan Rowland-Smith (S, 1), who recorded the final four outs en route to the save. Meanwhile, Whelan (L, 2-1) suffered his first loss.
Overall, the PawSox collected 13 hits. Five different players enjoyed multi-hit performances, helping Pawtucket to its first back-to-back victories since a six-game winning streak from May 6-11.
The Sox will look to win the four-day series outright at 6:05 p.m. on Sunday, when they reach the midpoint of their eight-game road trip. Lefty Chris Hernandez (2-2, 4.12) is scheduled to oppose Louisville's Pedro Villarreal (1-2, 4.88). For stats, box score, or more information, please visit www.pawsox.com.
