Syracuse Mets News Release
The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, claimed their sixth extra-inning win of the season with a 2-1, 10-inning victory over the Columbus Clippers on Saturday night. Right fielder Chris Rahl tied the game with an eighth-inning home run, and center fielder Eury Perez plated the game-winning run with an RBI double in the 10th. The win pushed Syracuse's season-high win streak to five games.
Syracuse (21-27) grabbed victory in the 10th inning against Clippers closer Preston Guilmet. The first two Chiefs batters in the inning, Zach Walters and Mike Costanzo, each reached base on a walk. After Brian Jeroloman struck out attempting to bunt, Rahl grounded into a fielder's choice that forced Costanzo out at second base. With runners at first and third, Perez sliced a ball into the right-field corner for a double, scoring Walters for the go-ahead run, though Rahl was thrown out at home on the play.
The teams traded zeroes for the game's first four-and-one-half innings, until Columbus (28-21) plated the game's first run against Chiefs starter Ross Ohlendorf in the bottom of the fifth. Center fielder Ezequiel Carrera walked with one out to bring up left fielder Tim Fedroff, who worked the count full. With Carrera running on the payoff pitch, Fedroff knocked a ground ball to the spot vacated by second baseman Will Rhymes for a single, and Carrera scampered all the way home to score on the play.
Syracuse, meanwhile, picked up just one hit in the first seven innings against three Columbus pitchers. Starter Danny Salazar tossed four hitless innings, with Chris Marrero picking up the Chiefs' first hit on a fifth-inning leadoff single. Right-handers Jerry Gil and Matt Langwell would combine to get the next 10 outs without allowing another hit.
The Chiefs, however, were far from done. With one out in the eighth inning, Rahl crushed a 1-0 pitch from Langwell over the left-field wall for a game-tying solo home run. The homer extended Rahl's hit streak to 16 games - two shy of Gwinnett's Jose Constanza for the longest hit streak in the International League this season.
After Perez's heroics in the 10th, closer Erik Davis finished off a brilliant pitching performance with a 1-2-3 frame, striking out Chun Chen to end the game. The strikeout was the 16th by a Chiefs pitcher in the game, tying Syracuse's best single-game mark this season for team strikeouts. Starter Ross Ohlendorf picked up 11 of those 16 strikeouts, tying a personal career high.
Syracuse aims for a series sweep at Columbus on Sunday night at 6:05. Chiefs right-hander Chris Young and Clippers right-hander Joe Martinez are the scheduled starters.
