Lake Erie Crushers News Release
O'FALLON, Mo. -- The Lake Erie Crushers came from behind twice on Friday evening at T.R. Hughes Ballpark, but surrendered a pair of runs in the ninth inning, as the River City Rascals stole a 7-6 decision in the opening game of the series.
The one-run loss for the Crushers (3-4) was their third of the season, and for the Rascals (5-2) the walk off victory was their second in a row.
The Crushers got out to a rocky start, as River City put two on the board in the bottom of the first inning. Walks were issued to the first two batters, before Evan Crawford belted a two-run double off the wall in center.
Lake Erie came back and scored three in the third to take their first lead of the contest. Ricardo Lizcano began the inning with a walk, and made his way to third after back-to-back singles from Max Casper and Guantlett Eldemire. Lizcano scored on a passed ball, before Andrew Davis tied the game with a run scoring single, and Eldemire scored the go ahead run when Daniel Bowman reached on a fielder's choice.
The lead was short-lived, as the Rascals answered with a trio of runs in the bottom of the inning. Curran Redal belted a solo homer to start the inning, before Crawford and Phil Wunderlich followed with singles. Steve Carillo came through two batters later with a two-run double to give the Rascals a 5-3 lead.
Two-out Thunder produced three runs for the Crushers to give them the lead again in the fifth inning. Davis started the two-out rally with a triple, and he scored on Bowman's double to the gap in right-center. Russ Moldenhauer and Anderson Hidalgo capped the big inning with back-to-back RBI singles.
River City was relatively silent through the next three innings, until they struck for two to win it in the bottom of the ninth. Andrew Edge started the inning with a base hit, and Will Block followed with a double to right center. A balk was called on Brad Duffy (0-1) to bring in the tying run. Duffy then retired the next two batters, before surrendering the game winning RBI single to Andy Scott.
Duffy allowed a pair of runs on three hits through two-thirds of the ninth inning and was tagged with the loss. Alex Kaminsky started the game, and allowed five runs on six hits while fanning eight over five innings of action. Jordan Wellander provided three scoreless innings of two-hit relief. Brett Harman (1-0) scored the victory for the Rascals after retiring all eight batters he faced in the final 2.2 innings of work.
Eldemire paced the Crushers offensively with a 3-for-5 performance, and extended his hitting streak to six games. Davis hit safely twice, and has eight hit over the first four games of the road trip. Moldenhauer also provided a pair of hits, and has now reached in his last six games.
The Crushers will continue their three game series against the River City Rascals at T.R. Hughes Ballpark on Saturday night. The Lake Erie starter has not been announced, but the Rascals will throw right hander Drew Goodman (0-0, 0.00). First pitch is scheduled for 8:05 PM.
