Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

Scott Dunn delivered his second straight strong seven-inning outing and the Traverse City Beach Bums scored four times in the bottom of the seventh as the Beach Bums rallied for a 4-3 win over the Rockford Aviators on Friday night.

Both Dunn and Rockford starter, Jon Gulbransen were on point right from the outset. Through five innings, neither allowed a run and each surrendered just two runners with no offensive players reaching past first base.

To start the top of the sixth, Dunn got Ray Delvalle to fly out to rightfield. Alvaro Ramirez then skied a ball to right-center. Sean Gusrang and Matt Howard converged on the ball, but neither called the other off as the two collided while the ball bounced to the turf. By the time the Beach Bums recovered, Ramirez stood on third base. Ted Obregon, Michael Hur, and Kenny Bryant each followed with singles for the Aviators to score a pair of runs and make it 2-0 Rockford. A sacrifice fly by Matt Greener plated Hur for the final run of the inning and a three-run Aviators advantage.

Traverse City would respond in the next inning as Chase Burch doubled down the leftfield line to begin the seventh off reliever Kelley Wagner. Gusrang followed with a single to right, moving Burch to third. Zach Kometani came up and grounded a ball that rolled up the third base line. Greener let the ball roll, looking for it to go foul, but the ball stopped on the fair side of the line, allowing Burch to score and moving Gusrang to second. After a fly out and a pitching change, Marcus Nidiffer laced a ball through the left side of the infield to score Gusrang and slice the Rockford lead to 3-2. Howard was up next and singled to load the bases for Ryan Still. On a 1-2 pitch, Still was hit by a Garrett Granitz offering to force home Kometani and tying the game at 3-3. Andrew Cohn capped the frame with a sac fly to center to bring in Nidiffer for a 4-3 Beach Bums lead.

From there, the bullpen took over as both Scott Mueller and Matt Miller pitched a perfect inning to close the game with Miller picking up his second save of the year.

Dunn (2-0) earned the win matching his career-high with seven innings of work. He allowed the Aviators just the sixth inning runs, walking one and striking out five, a feat that included ending his outing by striking out the side in the seventh. It was Dunn's 17th win in a Traverse City uniform, propelling him into fourth place by himself on the Traverse City all-time wins list. Granitz (0-1) took the loss for Rockford, spoiling an excellent outing by Gulbransen who shut the Beach Bums out over six innings, surrendering two hits, striking out seven.

The series continues tomorrow as Traverse City hosts its annual Memorial Day Tribute, honoring active and retired members of the military throughout the night. Burny Mitchem (0-0, 0.00) gets the start for the Beach Bums against Seafth Howe (0-0, 0.00) for the Aviators. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
