
Miners Comeback Falls Short

Washington, PA - The Miners scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning after trailing 6-1 but fell short as the Wild Things would defeat the Miners 6-4. Miners starting pitcher Richard Sullivan struggled through 4.2 innings as he allowed six runs (four earned) off nine hits with three walks and two strikeouts.
The Miners scored first off Wild Things starting pitcher Shawn Sanford as Tyler Stubblefield hit a base hit to score center fielder Tyler Hall, who led off the inning with a triple. The Miners would lead 1-0 until Washington tied the game off Sullivan in the bottom of the first inning.
The Wild Things would add four runs off Sullivan in the bottom of the second inning to take a 5-1 lead and add another run off Sullivan in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 6-1 lead. Miners reliever Dayne Quist pitched 2.1 innings and struck out five batters to keep the Wild Things at six runs. Matt Sergey pitched the bottom of the eighth inning and went scoreless walking one batter and recording three strikeouts.
The Miners made things interesting in the top of the ninth inning as Jon Eisen pinch hit for Jason Ganek and hit a lead off single off Wild Things reliever Alfonso Yevoli. Right fielder Ken Gregory hit a base hit to advance Eisen to third base who came home on a base hit by catcher Mario Mercedes to cut the Wild Things lead to five runs, 6-2. After left fielder Ryan Curl grounded into a fielder's choice, Tyler Hall was hit by a pitch and loaded the bases for short stop Tyler Stubblefield. Stubblefield would hit a two RBI single off Yevoli to cut the Wild Things lead to 6-4.
Carlos Mendez would ground out into a double play off Wild Things reliever Orlando Santos who would record his first save of 2013. The Miners would fall to 3-4 on the regular season. The Miners and Wild Things play tomorrow night at 6:05 pm with the Heartland Regional Medical Center Pregame Show on the Miners Radio Network beginning at 5:45 pm with Mike Ventola. RHP Blake Nation will be opposed by Wild Things starter RHP Shawn Blackwell.
The Southern Illinois Miners are the 2012 Frontier League Champions and have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year three times since its inception. It has also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007.
