Lancaster Stormers News Release
Identical twin brothers Josh and Jason Lowey limited the Barnstormers to four hits and two runs over the first six innings, and the Somerset Patriots went on to beat Lancaster, 5-2, in the middle game of a three-game series Wednesday evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
The series is now even at one game apiece with the rubber game coming up on Thursday evening.
The Loweys were staked to a 4-0 lead. Somerset loaded the bases in the top of the first on a single, an error and a hit batter. Dwayne Pollok (3-2) fanned Corey Smith for the first out, but Luis Montanez delivered a two-run double down the left field line on an 0-2 pitch to give the Patriots a quick 2-0 jump. Pollok worked through the rest of that inning and got out of two-out trouble in the fourth thanks to a diving stop by second baseman Travis Denker on a grounder by Josh Kroeger.
However, Smith slammed a two-run homer in the fifth to increase the Lancaster deficit.
Josh Lowey checked the Barnstormers on only a fourth inning leadoff double by Jerry Owens until Ryan Harvey mashed a leadoff homer to right center in the bottom of the fifth.
The Barnstormers had their best chance in the sixth, the inning where one Lowey picked up the other.
Starter Josh (4-1) walked Olmo Rosario with one out. Daryle Ward followed with a single flared into left center, and a walk to Denker loaded the bases. Harvey knocked in his second run of the ballgame with a bounder through the right side.
Exit Josh, enter Jason. The shorter-haired of the twins got Kevin Howard to line to center and retired Kody Kirkland on a fly ball to deep left to end the threat.
Jake Fox opened the seventh with a solo home run, his league leading 10th. Lancaster had the tying run to the plate twice over the final three innings but could not capitalize on the opportunity in either case.
Jon Hunton, who lost a 6-5 lead in the ninth on Tuesday, bounced back to record his 12th save of the campaign.
Brian Grening (0-2) will take the hill for the Barnstormers on Thursday at 7:00. He will be opposed by lefty Graham Taylor (2-0). Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; 1600-AM, WPDC; 1390wlan.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app beginning at 6:45.
NOTES: Lancaster grounded into three double plays in the game...Lancaster was 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position in the game and is now 4-for-50 in the last six contests...Harvey ranks second in the league with eight long balls...Owens doubled on the 12th pitch he saw in the fourth inning...
