Power Finish Sweep of Intimidators With 8-6 Victory

Kannapolis, NC- The West Virginia Power beat the Kannapolis Intimidators 8-6 Wednesday at CMC-NorthEast Stadium to complete a three-game series sweep. The Power amassed 17 hits and moved two games over .500 for the first time this season.

The Power jumped out to an early lead against Kannapolis starter Brandon Brennan. With two down in the first inning, D.J. Crumlich doubled and scored on a triple by Stetson Allie. After Eric Wood walked, Walker Gourley reached on the first of four Kannapolis errors in the game, allowing Allie to score. Wood then crossed home for a 3-0 Power lead on a throwing error as Gourley attempted to steal second.

Kannapolis responded with a four run bottom of the first against West Virginia starter Clay Holmes. The first four batters in the inning reach on two singles a triple, and a double. With two outs, Justin Jirschele doubled in Brent Tanner for a 4-3 Intimidators lead.

West Virginia evened the score at four in the second on a single by Dilson Herrera that brought home Ashley Ponce. In the fourth, however, Kannapolis moved back in front on a run-scoring single by Michael Johnson.

Trailing 5-4 in the top of the fifth, the Power tied the game on a Jon Schwind single and then took the lead in the sixth. With the bases loaded, Allie grounded into a force play to score Junior Sosa. Wood singled in Crumlich to push West Virginia in front 7-5.

Each team added one more run against the bullpens. Tanner hit a solo home run to center field off Pat Ludwig in the seventh to cut the Power lead to one at 7-6. West Virginia added a run of insurance in the top of the ninth to seal the victory.

Holmes pitched four innings, striking out five and walking two, but did not factor in the decision. Ludwig (4-0) tossed four innings of relief for his fourth win this season while Kyle Haynes pitched a scoreless ninth for his second save. Brennan (1-7) took the loss after allowing the first seven runs over five and two-thirds.

All nine Power batters reached on at least one hit and six had multi-hit games. Herrera and Crumlich paced the team with three hits each while Sosa, Allie, Francisco Diaz, and Ashley Ponce had two hits each.
