New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
PORTLAND, Maine - In conjunction with the Eastern League, the New Hampshire Fisher Cats announced that right-handed pitcher Marcus Walden was named the league's Pitcher of the Week for the period ending May 19. Walden took home the honors based on his outing against the Portland Sea Dogs on May 14, and just hours before he faces the Sea Dogs for a second time on Monday night.
On May 14, Walden matched his career high by tossing 7.2 shutout innings against the Sea Dogs, setting the stage for a 3-0 Fisher Cats victory. The Californian carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning before surrendering the first of two hits he allowed in the game. He finished with a season-high six strikeouts, one shy of his career mark, and two walks. Walden allowed just one runner to advance beyond first base while earning his second win of the season.
For the 2013 campaign, Walden has posted a 2-4 record, but is currently ranked ninth in the circuit with a 2.96 ERA. The Double-A rookie has tossed 45.2 innings, giving up 57 hits against just twelve walks. Due to his high ground ball ratio, he has recorded just 23 strikeouts, but has allowed only one home run. Walden was the Blue Jays' ninth-round pick in the 2007 draft out of Fresno City College (CA).
The weekly honor is the first for Walden at the Double-A level. It's the first for the Fisher Cats since Brad Glenn was named Player of the Week on July 9, 2012. The last pitcher to earn a weekly honor was Henderson Alvarez for the week of June 20-27, 2011.
The Fisher Cats continue their seven-game road trip tonight at 6 p.m. at against the Portland Sea Dogs. Walden is slated to face Portland RHP Charlie Haeger (1-0, 3.45). Radio coverage begins at 5:45 p.m. with Tom Gauthier on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network at www.nhfishercats.com.
The Fisher Cats return home for a Memorial Day Weekend series against the New Britain Rock Cats (Minnesota Twins) on Friday night, May 24. The series-opener features Atlas Fireworks, and all premium box and box seat tickets are buy one, get one free courtesy of ENH Power.
