Burlington Bees News Release

Eduard Santos struck out a career-high 10 batters in five innings of work to help the Burlington Bees edge the Cedar Rapids Kernels 6-4 and salvage a split of the doubleheader at Perfect Game Field on Wednesday night.

Santos (1-1) made his second professional start on Wednesday night and it went almost as well as his first start, in which he allowed one run in five innings on one hit. It took until the fourth inning for the Kernels to get a hit against Santos on Wednesday, as Tyler Grimes hit a two-run home run off Santos to pull the Kernels within one run. The Dominican right-hander went on to strike out the side in the fifth to close out his outing with a bang.

Burlington took an early 3-0 lead after scoring one run in the second on a balk and then getting two more in the third on a two-run home run by Wade Hinkle off of Steven Gruver (2-1).

The Bees got some much needed insurance runs after the Grimes home run made it a 3-2 game, with Burlington scoring one run in the each of the final three frames. Michael Bolaski doubled home Hinkle in the fourth, Sherman Johnson tripled home Pedro Toribio in the fifth and Sandy Martinez hit a sacrifice fly to score Jonathan Walsh in the sixth.

Joey Krehbiel pitched a scoreless sixth, while Jairo Diaz allowed two runs in the seventh, but picked up all three outs to give the Bees the win.

In game one of the doubleheader, Burlington scored three runs in the first on a two-run double by Jonathan Walsh and a single off the bat of Anthony Bemboom that scored Walsh.

Alex Keudell, who has been the Bees' ace, struggled tonight, allowing five runs in five innings. He surrendered four runs in the third on a two-run double by Niko Goodrum, a double by Jorge Polanco that scored Goodrum and a base hit by Dalton Hicks, which scored Polanco.

The Bees stormed back to take a 5-4 lead when Andrew Ray doubled home Walsh and Chevy Clarke. But Hicks doubled home Polanco in the fifth to tie the game and Kurt Spomer (1-3) threw a wild pitch in the sixth that scored Jeremias Pineda to give Cedar Rapids the go-ahead run.

Burlington will go for a series split on Thursday night when Pat Lowery takes the mound opposite of Mason Melotakis. The game can be heard on News Radio 1490 KBUR or gobees.com at 6:30 p.m.
