Carolina Mudcats News Release
Zebulon, N.C. - The Carolina Mudcats watched Salem erase a three-run deficit in the seventh, and fell 5-4 to the Red Sox on Wednesday night at Five County Stadium. The Mudcats (13-26) dropped their sixth straight game and ninth straight at home.
Salem improves their record to (17-20) with the series win against Carolina. Heri Quevedo (1-2) pitched 4.2 innings in relief for his first win of the season. He limited the Mudcats to one unearned run while scattering three hits. He struck out two.
Jacob Lee (0-4) found himself on the losing side of the decision after having one of his best outings of the year. Lee pitched spectacular, but ran into a wall in the seventh. The right-hander would end up pitching 6.1 innings, giving up six hits on five runs with five strikeouts.
The Mudcats struck first in the bottom of the first scoring two runs. Tyler Naquin drew a leadoff walk, and Francisco Lindor doubled to score Naquin. The hit extended Lindor's on-base streak to 23 straight games. Lindor later scored from third on a sacrifice fly to left by Luigi Rodriguez for a 2-0 score.
Salem would respond in the top of the second by scoring a run. David Renfroe tripled to right field, and a ball hit to second baseman Joe Sever by Blake Swihart would drive him in.
A pitch from William Cuevas to lead off the fifth hit Yhoxian Medina, and he moved to second on a wild pitch. Naquin singled to right, putting runners on the corners with no outs. A sacrifice fly to left by Lindor plated Medina for a 3-1 lead.
Sever would double in the sixth to put the Mudcats in scoring position, and a grounder to third by Medina drove him across the plate. Carolina was up 4-1 as Jacob Lee was dominated into the seventh.
Salem would begin to swing the bat in the seventh leading off with Keury De La Cruz hitting a ground rule double into right field. A single by Brandon Jacobs put runners on the corners. Renfroe drove in the first run on a sacrifice fly, and the lead was cut, 4-2.
Blake Swihart singled to put runners on the corners after Jacobs stole second. After a Henry Ramos single to bring home Jacobs, a double up the third base line by Matt Gedman, against reliever J.D. Reichenbach, scored Swihart. Ramos raced home on the same play when left fielder Luigi Rodriguez misplayed the ball.
Salem would hold the Mudcats for the rest of the game despite Carolina hitting leadoff singles in the seventh and eighth innings.
