MOBILE, Ala. - The Jacksonville Suns (20-14) dropped the first two games of a series for the first time 2013, falling to the Mobile BayBears (18-19) on Monday by a final of 3-2.
The Suns could not score against Mobile starter Archie Bradley (2-0), who limited Jacksonville to just two hits over six shutout innings. Bradley also struck out nine and walked three in the BayBears victory at Hank Aaron Stadium.
Suns starter Sam Dyson (0-3) matched Bradley pitch for pitch through the first two innings but eventually relented in the third. Ender Inciarte singled and advanced to third on Jake Marisnick's throwing error to begin the rally against Jacksonville. Mike Freeman then bounced a ball to Noah Perio who had had it carom off his glove at second base for an error to score Inciarte and give Mobile a 1-0 lead.
Brent Clevlen, who homered twice in the series opener on Sunday, perpetuated the frame with a run-scoring double to put the BayBears up 2-0. Garrett Weber then promptly singled to right to plate Clevlen and run the Mobile advantage to 3-0.
The runs would be the only three allowed by Dyson over his four and two thirds innings of work. The Jacksonville right-hander took his third loss while allowing five hits, striking out two and walking three. Two of the three runs allowed were unearned.
Bradley, meanwhile, was dominant for the BayBears. The number two overall prospect in the Arizona Diamondbacks system lowered his ERA to 0.64 and allowed both of his hits in the second inning, escaping the frame unscathed.
It was only after the BayBears right-hander left the game after the sixth that the Suns were able to get on the board. Bryan Woodall took over for Bradley and immediately found himself in the stretch when Audy Ciriaco reached on an error to lead off the inning. Two batters later, pinch hitter Daniel Pertusati tripled to score Ciriaco and pull the Suns to within two runs.
Jacksonville would get one run closer the very next batter, as Christian Yelich lifted a sacrifice fly to the warning track in left field to score Pertusati and make the score 3-2. The RBI was Yelich's 18th in just 19 games with the Suns.
It wasn't to be for the Suns, however, as they never mounted another rally against Mobile. Kevin Musnon came on for the ninth and gave Mobile its second straight victory over Jacksonville with a one, two, three inning, recording his fifth save in the process.
The Suns managed just three hits in the defeat, with Pertusati's triple the only extra base hit among them. Jacksonville also struck out 12 times at the plate and left six runners on base.
The Suns will take on the BayBears in game three of the five-game set on Tuesday. The Suns will try to avoid a series loss behind right-hander Matt Neil (1-2, 4.50), who is coming off his first win of the season. Mobile, looking for the series victory, will send southpaw David Holmberg (1-2, 1.98) to the mound. First pitch is set for 8:05 p.m. ET.
Suns fans can listen to Tuesday's game on the Suns Baseball Network, 94.1 WSOS-FM, or through jaxsuns.com, MiLB.com or the Suns iPhone or Android app, beginning at 7:50 p.m. with the UF and Shands Suns Pre-Game Show.
