Jackson Generals News Release
JACKSON, TENN - (May 13, 2013) - The Tennessee Smokies (18-18) grabbed four runs off four hits in the ninth as the Jackson Generals' (15-20) bullpen blew their seventh save opportunity. Tyler Burgoon (0-1, 3.00) gave up all four hits in the ninth, including two home runs. The loss drops the Generals five games below the .500 mark for the first time this season.
The Smokies struck first in the second when Rubi Silva hit a double that scored Rafael Lopez. It was Silva's 19th RBI this season, which leads the ball club in that area. The Generals quickly answered with two runs in their half of the second. James Jones (1-2, 2 BB) and Steven Proscia (0-4) both manufactured RBIs. Brad Miller (1-3) drove Leon Landry (2-4, 2B) home in the third and Jackson was cruising early.
Chance Ruffin (1-1, 2.79) took his 112-pitch start into the seventh inning. He surrendered only two runs while allowing seven hits and striking out six. It looked as though Ruffin would take his second win of the season, but things unraveled in the ninth.
Tyler Burgoon, activated from the disabled list earlier Monday, came in for the save but failed to shake the rust off. He faced six hitters, giving up a lead-off home run to Rafael Lopez (2-4, 2 R, RBI) and a game-tying shot from Rubi Silva (2-4, 2 RBI, R). Tennessee would grab two more runs in the ninth to finish the game a 6-4 victor.
Dallas Beeler (3-2, 3.14) went six strong, conceding two runs on seven hits. Beeler got 15 of his 18 outs via the groundball. Trey McNutt pitched a scoreless eighth to get the win and Kevin Rhoderick struck out two in the ninth to get the save for the Smokies.
The Generals will look to turn the tides tomorrow as they give the ball to their ace. Taijuan Walker (3-3, 2.23) goes against Alberto Cabrera (3-1, 4.31) in the 7:05 CST start at the Ballpark in Jackson. The game can be heard on 96.5 ESPN, jacksongeneralsbaseball.com and the TuneIn Radio app.
