Suns' Yelich Named Southern League's Hitter of the Week

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Southern League announced Monday Jacksonville Suns outfielder Christian Yelich has been named the league's Hitter of the Week for the time frame between May 6-12.

During that stretch, the Marlins' second-best prospect according to Baseball America, compiled a .455 average (10-22), adding seven runs, two doubles, two triples, two homers, six RBI and six walks. The outfielder also tied a single-game career-high with five hits on May 7 against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos.

Yelich during that span ranked tied for first in extra-base hits (six), second in runs scored and hits, third in average and tied for third in on-base percentage (.552) in the Southern League.

The 22-year-old has reached base in all 19 contests with the Suns this year and owns a .329 average (26-79), adding 17 runs, seven doubles, four triples, three homers and 17 RBI, as well as 11 walks. In addition to leading the Southern League in slugging percentage (.633) as of May 13, the California native also ranks third in batting average.

Yelich becomes the second Jacksonville Suns player to be honored by the Southern League this season after Marcell Ozuna was recognized as the league's Hitter of the Week for the span between April 22-28.

The Suns are currently in the midst of a ten-game road trip, and are scheduled to take on the Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks tonight at 8:05 p.m. ET at Hank Aaron Stadium. Jacksonville returns home to Bragan Field on May 23 for a five-game series with the Birmingham Barons.
