Iowa Cubs News Release

Reno, NV - Guillermo Moscoso set season-highs with seven strikeouts and seven innings pitched, leading the Iowa Cubs (13-20) to a 4-1 victory over the Reno Aces (12-25) at Aces Ballpark tonight. The Cubs take a 1-0 lead in this series and improve to 2-3 on this road trip.

The Cubs grabbed the early lead against Aces' starter Tyler Skaggs in the second inning. Josh Vitters led off with a double off the wall in left and Dave Sappelt followed with a two-run homer to get the Cubs on the board. Sappelt finished 2-for-4, shaking off a 1-for-14 start since coming down from Chicago. Skaggs (2-5) worked through 6.1 innings without allowing another run and struck out seven, but would suffer the loss.

Moscoso (2-0) controlled the action and only allowed one runner past second base. He did get some help from his defense in the bottom of the third inning. With one out and former Cub Tony Campana at the plate, the Aces put on a hit and run play. As Tuffy Gosewisch took off from first base, Cubs' shortstop Donnie Murphy broke to cover second base. Campana connected on a line drive up the middle that forced Murphy to stop, take a step back to his right, and dive to snare it. Gosewisch had no chance to get back to first base and the double play ended the inning. Campana finished 0-for-4, ending his 11-game hitting streak.

The Aces got on the board in the bottom of the seventh. Taylor Harbin led off with a single and advanced to third when Moscoso's pickoff attempt went wild and rolled down the right field line. Tyler Kuhn drove in Harbin with a groundout and Moscoso retired the next two batters to make the run unearned.

The Cubs added two insurance runs against reliever Evan Marshall in the ninth. J.C. Boscan led off with a double and Murphy was hit by a pitch. After a strikeout and a groundout, the runners were at second and third with two outs for Brett Jackson. Jackson came through with a ground ball base hit into center field that brought in both men for his 10th and 11th RBI of the season.

Zach Putnam worked a scoreless eighth for the hold and Blake Parker finished the ninth to earn his fifth save of the season. Putnam and Parker have each allowed just one earned run in their last 12 innings of work.

The Cubs and Aces continue this series tomorrow afternoon at 3:05 p.m. Central time. LH Chris Rusin (2-3, 3.79) will start for the Cubs against RH Randall Delgado (0-3, 8.80) for the Aces. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 and streamed at iowacubs.com with the pre-game show starting at 2:45.
