BlueClaws Bash Hoppers Again 9-4

Greensboro, NC - For the second night in a row, the Lakewood BlueClaws (12-22) scored six runs in an inning and used it to top the Greensboro Grasshoppers (15-19) 9-4, Saturday night at NewBridge Bank Park. The win marks the second in a row and sixth away from home for Lakewood this season.

For the fourth time in as many games the BlueClaws plated the first run of the game. Zach Taylor led off the inning with a single off of 'Hoppers starter Ramon del Orbe and then stole second with Alejandro Villalobos at the plate. Villalobos singled to plate Taylor, and gave the BlueClaws a 1-0 lead.

The inning continued on when Chace Numata doubled and put runners at second and third with one out. Brian Pointer singled home Villalobos and Art Charles followed with a sacrifice fly to put Lakewood in front 3-0.

Greensboro responded with a pair of runs in the second, but Miguel Nunez stranded the tying run at second to end the frame. Alfredo Lopez drove home Cameron Flynn from third on a sacrifice fly to center and Anthony Gomez scored on Cody Keefer's RBI single.

In the fourth it was the 'Claws powering up for their second, six-run inning in as many games. Larry Greene, Jr. led off the inning with an infield single and two hitters later Taylor connected and hit a two run homer to right, his second in as many nights.

Brian Pointer tallied two more on an RBI double, and Art Charles finished off the inning with a two run, monster, homerun to right center and put Lakewood in front 9-2.

Del Orbe took the brunt of the attack by Lakewood and delivered three and two-thirds innings of nine hit, nine earned run ball. He walked two and struck out three.

Greensboro tacked on a run in the sixth on an RBI groundout by Viosergy Rosa and their final run in the ninth on a controversial homerun by Gomez in the ninth.

Nunez (4-0) earned his fourth win in a row and delivered a career-high six innings. He allowed three runs, two earned on six hits; he walked a batter and struck out one. Jeb Stefan and Delvi Francisco closed out the game on the mound.

The BlueClaws and Grasshoppers are set to wrap up the four game series at 4:00 pm Sunday afternoon from NewBridge Bank Park. LHP Yoel Mecias (0-2, 5.48) will make his first outright start of the season, and RHP Austin Bryce (2-3, 5.26) gets the nod for Greensboro. The BlueClaws return home to open up a seven-game homestand Monday night at 6:35 pm against the Delmarva Shorebirds.
