Iowa Cubs Roster Has New Look Today

May 7, 2013 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Iowa Cubs News Release

Colorado Springs, CO - The Iowa Cubs roster has a new look today after a series of roster moves. Prior to their game last night, the Chicago Cubs recalled RH Rafael Dolis, selected the contract of OF Ryan Sweeney, and optioned OF Dave Sappelt to Iowa. For tonight's game, INF Donnie Murphy and OF Darnell McDonald have been activated from Iowa's disabled list. INF Tim Torres was re-assigned to double-A Tennessee and the Cubs released RH Cory Wade.

This is Dolis' second trip to the big leagues this season. He has no record, a 3.52 ERA, and one save with Iowa on the year. He pitched in one game and retired the only batter he faced in his first stint with Chicago this season. The Cubs signed Sweeney as a minor league free agent just prior to the season. In 23 games with Iowa, he batted .337 (28-for-83) with a team-high six home runs and 16 RBI.

Sappelt spent all of last season with Iowa prior to a September call-up to Chicago. He made his first big league Opening Day roster this year, but was hitting .178 (8-for-45) in 20 games for Chicago. Last year, he tied for fourth in the PCL with 133 games played and hit .266 (133-for-500) with 26 doubles, seven homers, and 54 RBI. The Cubs acquired Sappelt along with LH Travis Wood and INF Ronald Torreyes from the Cincinnati Reds for LH Sean Marshall on December 23, 2011.

Murphy has been out since April 24 with a sprained left knee. He and Sweeney were both signed at the end of spring training and joined Iowa just prior to Opening Day. Murphy is batting .205 (8-for-39) with three RBI in 14 games for the I-Cubs. McDonald has been out since April 27 with a sprained left thumb. He is batting .182 (12-for-66) with two doubles, a homer, and five RBI in 22 games with Iowa this year.

Torres returns to Tennessee for a second stint this season. With Iowa, he is 2-for-21 in 10 games. Wade was 0-2 with a 7.88 ERA (14ER/16.0IP) in 10 relief appearances.

The Cubs open a four-game series at Security Service Field in Colorado Springs tonight at 7:35 Central time. RH Nick Struck (0-2, 6.50) will be on the mound for Iowa against RH Tyler Chatwood (1-0, 1.84) for the Sky Sox. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 and streamed live at iowacubs.com with the On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 6:15.
