LAKEWOOD, N.J. - The Lakewood BlueClaws (9-21) were stymied by the outstanding pitching, and fell to the Lexington Legends (15-16) in shutout fashion 2-0 Monday night at FirstEnergy Park. The loss marks the fourth straight for Lakewood, and the third time they have been shutout in the four game span.
The story of the night was Lexington's starter Bryan Brickhouse. The righty began the night by striking the first four men he faced. Overall, Brickhouse (1-3) retired the first 14 Lakewood BlueClaws hitters in a row, before Larry Greene, Jr. walked with two down in the fifth.
Brickhouse's no-hit bid continued into the sixth, until Josh Ludy broke it up with a leadoff double. The righty retired the next three in order to get out of the jam. His night came to an end in the seventh after he allowed a single and a walk with two down.
Alec Mills took over and got out of the two on in scoring position, two down BlueClaws rally in the inning. Mills finished the game on the mound and earned his fourth save of the season.
The Legends sported a run of support for their pitcher in the fourth. Humberto Arteaga and Bubba Starling reached via back-to-back singles off of Yoel Mecias to begin the frame. A wild pitch put the two in scoring position with no one out. Jin-Ho Shin followed two hitters later with an RBI groundout to third, and Lexington had the 1-0 advantage.
Mecias (0-1) lasted just four innings and allowed the one run on two hits, a walk, and three strikeouts. Miguel Nunez was the first, and only pitcher out of the bullpen for Lakewood.
The righty was again outstanding and pitched the final five innings and allowed just one run on four hits. The insurance run came in the top of the ninth off of the righty.
Fred Ford tripled down the line in right and Nic Cukovich followed with an RBI single through the hole on the left side, which doubled the Lexington lead to 2-0.
