Aces Drop Series Finale, 5-2
April 19, 2013 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Reno Aces News Release
RENO, Nev.-RHP Nelson Figueroa dealt his first quality start of the season, but the Reno Aces fell 5-2 to the Colorado Springs Sky Sox in the series finale Friday night at Aces Ballpark.
With the loss, the Aces split the series with the Sky Sox. Reno also split a series with Colorado Springs to begin the season at Security Service Field.
Sky Sox third baseman Ryan Wheeler, who was a Pacific Coast League All-Star with Reno in 2012, was responsible for driving in the first three runs for Colorado Springs. Wheeler had an RBI single in the top of the first, then blasted a towering homerun to left field with a man on to put the Sky Sox on top 3-0.
Catcher Tuffy Gosewisch hit his second homerun of the season, and the first hit of the game for Reno, in the bottom of the third to bring the Aces within two, down 3-1. Neither team was able to generate any runs until Chris Owings' RBI single in the bottom of the eighth that brought the Aces within one run.
LHP Joe Paterson, who entered the game in the ninth, gave up a leadoff homer to Tyler Colvin, extending the Sky Sox lead to 4-2. With two outs, Colorado Springs plated another run off the bat of pinch hitter Nolan Arenado.
The Aces got their leadoff man on in the bottom of the frame off an error by Sky Sox shortstop by Tommy Manzella, but a double play and a fly out ended the threat.
Figueora, who was charged with the loss, bounced back from his last outing against Sacramento, during which he gave up 10 earned runs in the 22-6 loss to the River Cats. On Friday night, he gave up only three runs on seven hits through seven innings, and struck out four.
LHP Nick Schmidt struck out seven Aces batters, and earned the win for the Sky Sox. He gave up one earned run on just two hits. RHP Coty Woods, who threw a perfect ninth inning, was credited with a save for the Sky Sox.
The series wraps up Friday night, as the Aces look to secure their first series victory of the season. RHP Nelson Figueroa (0-1, 14.73 ERA) gets the nod for Reno, while Colorado Springs will counter with LHP Nick Schmidt (0-1, 4.14 ERA). First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. PT. The game will be highlighted by Saint Mary's Fireworks Friday presented by KRNV News 4.
