Stephen Drew to Rehab with the Sea Dogs

Portland, Maine - The Boston Red Sox have assigned infielder Stephen Drew to the Portland Sea Dogs on a Major League rehabilitation assignment. Drew will wear #18, and is expected to be in tonight's Opening Day lineup. The younger brother of J.D. Drew, Stephen becomes Portland's first ever MLB rehab assignment in a season opener.

The Sea Dogs open their 20th season tonight at 6:00 PM against the Trenton Thunder (Yankees) at Hadlock Field.

Drew was placed on Boston's 7-day disabled list on March 28th (retro to 3/27), due to a concussion suffered on March 7th, when he was hit on the helmet by a pitch.

The Atlanta, Georgia nativeis the 27th player to make a Major League rehab assignment with the Portland Sea Dogs and the 21st as a Red Sox affiliate. Last year, the Sea Dogs had eight MLB rehabs - a franchise record.

Drew signed a one-year contract with the Red Sox on December 26, 2012 after splitting last season between Arizona (40 games) and Oakland (39 game). Is the younger brother of former Red Sox OF J.D. Drew, which marks the 11th time a set of brothers have both played for Boston.

A former first-round selection of the D-backs in the 2004 draft, Drew, spent his entire professional career with Arizona until being traded to Oakland on August 20, 2012. He still owns the Diamondbacks' franchise record for games played (753), triples (52) and third all-time in hits with 776.

All of his career appearances in the field have come at shortstop and a .978 fielding percentage All-Time is the 7th best among active shortstops with at least 650 games played. His 72 errors are third fewest among active shortstops with at least 3,000 total chances.
