Squirrels and Rock Cats Suspended in Opener
April 4, 2013 - Eastern League (EL1)
Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release
RICHMOND, VA - Mother Nature brought a halt to the Richmond Flying Squirrels opener against the New Britain Rock Cats on Thursday night at The Diamond. With the ballgame scoreless in the bottom of the fourth inning, persistent rains intensified, forcing the suspension. The game will be resumed and completed beginning at 6:05 p.m. on Friday night. The resumption of Thursday night's game will be followed by a seven-inning game constituting the second game of the four-game series.
Fans among the sellout crowd of 9.560 holding tickets to Thursday night's game may redeem them for tickets to any remaining regular season game (including Friday night) pending availability. Gates will open at The Diamond at 5:05 on Friday night.
Thursday's sellout marks the fourth consecutive season that the Flying Squirrels have sold out Opening Night at The Diamond.
"It is really a testament to our fans and how much they love this team and this game that they show up in droves like they do," said Flying Squirrels' Vice President Todd "Parney" Parnell. "I was so proud of them for not letting the weather dampen their spirits tonight. It was still a great night, and just the beginning."
Richmond right-hander Craig Westcott had thrown four scoreless innings prior to the stoppage. Left-hander Logan Darnell had worked into the fourth inning without allowing a Richmond run either. With two outs, Adam Duvall preceded the stoppage of the game with a double, and will stand at second base with two outs in the fourth inning when the game resumes on Friday.
Game two of the four-game series will follow the conclusion of game one on Friday night. LHP Jack Snodgrass (0-0, ---) will make the start for the Squirrels in game two against RHP Trevor May (10-13, 4.87) for the Rock Cats. Pregame coverage begins on SportsRadio 910 and SportsRadio910.com at 6:35 p.m.
