Sound Tigers Announce Player Transactions

February 23, 2013 - American Hockey League (AHL) Bridgeport Sound Tigers

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Feb. 23, 2013) - The Bridgeport Sound Tigers have announced the following transactions; goaltender Kevin Poulin has been recalled from loan by the New York Islanders from the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the American Hockey League, goaltender Rick DiPietro has cleared waivers and been assigned to Bridgeport, and goaltender Steve Valiquette has signed a professional tryout contract (PTO) with the Sound Tigers

Poulin, 22, has appeared in 16 career games with the Islanders, posting a 6-6-1 record with a 2.67 goals against average and a .918 save percentage. The Montreal, QC, native leads all Sound Tigers this season in games played (32), wins (15) and save percentage (.904).

In 96 career AHL games, all with the Sound Tigers, Poulin has a 51-37-5-7 record. Last season, he earned AHL Goaltender of the Month honors for January after recording three-straight shutouts to open the 2012 calendar year. The streak is the third-longest shutout streak in AHL history (Dec. 31 - Jan 8, 221:54).

DiPietro, 31, appeared in three games with the Islanders this season, posting an 0-3-0 record with a 4.09 goals against average and a .855 save percentage. The Winthrop, MA native most recently played with the Sound Tigers on a conditioning stint during the 2009-10 season, and has appeared in 99 games with the Sound Tigers from 2001-04 and 2009-10, totaling a 47-36-15 record at the AHL level.

DiPietro was selected by the New York Islanders with the first overall pick of the 2000 NHL Entry Draft and is a veteran of 318 NHL games spanning 11 seasons, amassing a 130-136-36 record with a 2.87 goals against average and a .902 save percentage.

Valiquette, 35, most recently played in Italy for Serie A1's HC Valpellice, totaling a 10-5-0 record over 15 games with a 2.10 goals against average and a .940 save percentage. The 6'6, 220-pound goaltender most recently dressed for the Sound Tigers last season when he served as Kevin Poulin's backup for two games, but did not appear in either contest. Valiquette's professional career has spanned 13 seasons and 46 NHL games over six seasons The veteran net-minder also spent two seasons with the Sound Tigers from 2001-03, posting a 25-19-4 record over 54 games.

The Sound Tigers return to action tonight when they host the Manchester Monarchs at Webster Bank Arena ay 7:00 p.m. for the AHL's first ever You Can Play Night in support of the You Can Play Program, which promotes equality in sports. Fans are encouraged to arrive early for a special panel discussion led by You Can Play co-founder Patrick Burke at 5:30 in the Webster Bank Arena concourse atrium.
