Portland Pirates News Release

Worcester, MA - The Worcester Sharks scored 3 goals in a 7 minute span en route to a 4-1 win over the Portland Pirates on Saturday night. Pirates' rookie goaltender Mike Lee picked up his first AHL defeat, with Phil Lane scoring the lone Pirates tally. The Pirates' loss, coupled with Providence's 3-2 shootout loss to the Norfolk Admirals, puts Portland 4 points back of the P-Bruins for first place in the Atlantic Division.

The first 10 minutes of the first period saw no scoring, and then the Sharks struck. Danny Groulx scored his 3rd goal of the year, and 2nd of the year against Portland, with a slap shot past Pirates starter Mike Lee at the 13:15 mark of the first. Bracken Kearns then scored the league leading 11th shorthanded goal allowed buy the Pirates this season, a breakaway goal with 4:35 left in the first. At the conclusion of the Pirates power play, Jimmy Bonneau hopped out of the box and scored his first goal of the season to give Worcester a 3-0 lead with 2:35 to go in the first, a lead that the Sharks would take into the first intermission.

Louis Domingue made his AHL debut in relief of Lee to start the second and was solid in net, stopping the first 12 shots he faced. However, Matt Tennyson added another Worcester tally with 3:08 left in the second, his 5th of the season, and the Pirates trailed by 4 after 2 periods of play.

The Pirates got some life back in the third, with rookie Phil Lane's shot beat Sharks goaltender Alex Stalock with 15:13 left in the third. Lane's 5th of the year, assisted by Rob Klinkhammer

The Pirates fall to 30-19-1-1 record, while the Sharks improve to a 24-21-1-5 on the year. Lee drops his first decision in 7 games played, allowing 3 goals on 13 shots. His record is now 5-1-0 on the season. Louis Domingue was solid in relief of Lee, stopping 22 of the 23 shots he faced in his AHL debut.
