Atlanta Gladiators News Release


The Gwinnett Gladiators went 1-2-0-0 this weekend for two points but remain in first place in the South Division and share the top spot in the Eastern Conference with the Reading Royals. Gwinnett has earned a 19-8-1-0 record on the season for 39 points. The Gladiators will face the Royals in Reading on Friday and Saturday night.

Reading Preview: Reading currently shares the top spot in the Eastern Conference and is in first place in the Atlantic Division. Reading has earned a record of 19-7-0-1 and 39 points. The Royals have notched a home record of 10-2-0-0 and won their last home game 3-2 against the Orlando Solar Bears on December 15th. The Royals are led by forward Yannick Tifu with 26 points in 27 games. Goalie Philipp Grubauer has played in 20 games and has earned a save percentage of 0.911. The Royals are 4-2-0-0 when facing a South Division team this season.

Thursday December 13: Greenville 3, Gwinnett 1 - L

"ªThe Greenville Road Warriors beat the Gladiators 3-1 at the Bi-Lo Center on Thursday. Defenseman Kyle Haines put the Road Warriors on the board 15:25 into the first and Jordie Johnston scored what proved to be the game winner at 5:02 of the second. Tyler Murovich broke the shutout with 36 seconds left in the third with a power-play goal for Gwinnett.

Saturday December 15: Gwinnett 3, South Carolina 2 - OTW

The Gwinnett Gladiators defeated the South Carolina Stingrays 3-2 in overtime. Casey Pierro-Zabotel scored the overtime game-winning goal 3:21 into the extra session to lead the Gladiators to victory. Rookie Evan Bloodoff scored the first goal of the game 12:37 into the first that put the Gladiators on top of the Stingrays 1-0. South Carolina notched the next two to take a 2-1 lead. It was Tyler Murovich who scored with 22 seconds left in the third to tie the score and send the game into overtime.

Sunday December 16: Greenville 3, Gwinnett 1 - L

The Gladiators were defeated by the Greenville Road Warriors for a second time this week. Gwinnett scored first as defenseman Dallas Jackson put the Gladiators on the board 1:18 into the second. The Road Warriors rattled off three unanswered goals which included a Bretton Cameron empty netter 19:17 into the third, gave the Road Warriors the 3-1 win.

News & Notes:

More than One: Casey Pierro-Zabotel had two points, a goal and an assist, in the Gladiators 3-2 overtime win on Saturday night in South Carolina. For Pierro-Zabotel, it was his 11th multiple point game this season. He had a career best 15 multiple point games with Wheeling in the 2010-11 season.

Along the Blue Line: Defenseman Dallas Jackson leads all Gladiators defensemen in scoring with seven goals and seven assists for 14 points. He notched his 7th goal of the season in Sunday's 3-1 loss at Greenville to move into a tie for third among defensemen in goals scored this season. Jackson's seven goals ties a career high for most goals in a season, a mark he set last year with Gwinnett.

Penalty Shot: The Gwinnett Gladiators were involved in their ECHL leading fourth penalty shot on Thursday night in Greenville. Mike Lee was successful as he stopped Greenville's Jeremy Gouchie. Gwinnett has been awareded a penalty shot twice and have been faced a pair of penalty shots this season. In addition to Lee stopping Gouchie, Lee also stopped Hunter Bishop of South Carolina on December 1st.

Casey Pierro-Zabotel was successful on his penalty shot opportunity against Greenville's Bryan Hince on December 8th. Tyler Murovich was unsuccessful against Fort Wayne's Ken Reiter on November 28th.

Tendencies: The Gladiators have notched a 17-1-1-0 record when scoring first in a game. Gwinnett is 11-0-1-0 when they lead after the first period. They have allowed three power-play goals in the last 10 games and have scored on five power-play opportunities. In the last ten games the Gladiators have a record of 6-4-0-0.

Milestones: Team Captain Andy Brandt is now ranked the third in most games played with the Gladiators organization with 313 games and leads the team in games played. Defenseman Dallas Jackson is one game away from playing in his 100th game with Gwinnett and seven points away from scoring 50 points with Gwinnett. Rookie Maxime Villlemaire is still looking to get his first professional goal along with newcomer Jason Clark.

Netminder Numbers: With a win on Saturday in South Carolina, Louis Domingue has an eight start winning streak heading into this week. His counterpart Mike Lee has dropped his last four starts in a row, but hasn't received much support from the offense. In those four losses, the Gladiators scored a total of five goals (.8 gpg). In Domingue's past eight starts, Gwinnett has scored a total of 30 goals (3.75 gpg).

Festivus for the Rest of Us / Ugly Holiday Sweater Contest: December 27th when the Gladiators host South Carolina at 7:05 p.m. it will be the Airing of the Grievances, the Fesitivus Pole display and the Feats of Strength.
