Monsters Outshoot But Can't Outscore Chicago

December 15, 2012 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Cleveland Monsters News Release

Despite leading in shots on goal by 11, the Lake Erie Monsters (12-13-1-1) fell to the Chicago Wolves (12-9-2-1) by a 3-2 score Saturday night before a crowd of 9,245 at Quicken Loans Arena. Mark Olver and David van der Gulik each scored their fifth goal of the season for the Monsters, while Mike Sgarbossa's assist gives him four points over his last two games.

Olver opened the scoring for the Monsters, picking up a loose puck and patiently delaying with the it, deceiving Chicago goalie Matt Climie and firing the puck into the top portion of the net from a sharp angle at 1:26 of the first period. Sgarbossa and Tyson Barrie assisted on the goal.

Between the 10:05 and 13:05 mark of the first period, Chicago countered with a pair of goals from Andrew Ebbett and Brett Sterling, giving the Wolves a 2-1 lead; a lead they would never surrender.

At 2:34 of the second period, Sterling netted his second goal of the game to give Chicago a 3-1 lead.

van der Gulik cut the Monsters deficit to a goal when he sent a shot from the right circle off the far post and near post and into the net at 12:24 of the second period; the marker was assisted by Andrew Aggozino.

Despite a flurry of chances at various times in the third period, and holding the Wolves to only three shots on goal, the Monsters were unable to tie the game.

Calvin Pickard is 6-6-1 after stopping 15 of 18 in the loss. Matt Climie is 5-7-0 after stopping 19 of 21 shots.

The Monsters will next meet Toronto at 7:00 PM on Wednesday at Quicken Loans Arena.
