Oshawa Generals News Release

Barrie, Ontario - The Oshawa Generals made their way to the Barrie Molson Centre on Thursday, as they took on the Eastern Conference leading Barrie Colts in the third of four match ups between the two teams. The Generals came out on top, defeating the Colts by a score of 3-1 in front of 3,324 spectators. Scott Laughton led the Generals offence, collecting 2 assists and an empty netter. Daniel Altshuller was in net for the Generals, picking up his 18th win of the season after a hard-fought third period that saw him face 13 shots.

With both teams missing key players to the World Juniors, the Colts and Generals seemed to have trouble finding chemistry throughout the fast-paced first period. Despite the confusion, Oshawa managed to take control the game with two consecutive power play chances, holding Barrie in its defensive end and forcing Colts netminder Mathias Niederberger to make several big stops to keep the game even. Scott Laughton had the best chance of the period, taking a shot as he cut to the slot on the rush, but Niederberger stayed square and made the save. The Generals out shot the Colts 15-7 after the first 20 minutes.

The second period was a different story, as Oshawa started clicking, scoring two goals to give them a 2-0 lead heading into the third. At 9:01 of the second, Scott Sabourin caught a rebound off of Niederberger, and quickly after letting the puck hit the ice, slipped the puck past the netminder for his 14th of the season. The Generals would extend their lead on a power play at 17:21, as Chris Carlisle picked the corner with a point shot, with Scott Sabourin providing a perfect screen in front. Scott Laughton and Michael Dal Colle assisted on both Generals goals.

Barrie picked up their play in the third, firing on all cylinders. Erik Bradford scored 5:36 into the third on tic-tac-toe passing play from Steven Beyers and Andreas Athanasiou. The quick passes caught Altshuller and the rest of the Generals off-guard, leaving Bradford all alone and making the score 2-1. The Colts used the momentum to put the Generals back on their heels, getting several scoring chances on Altshuller, but the Oshawa net minder stood on his head to keep the Generals in the lead. Altshuller's stellar play was rewarded when Scott Laughton won a race for the puck, and guided it into the empty net, sealing the victory. The goal was Laughton's third point of the night.

Oshawa out shot Barrie 42-27. Michael Dal Colle and Scott Sabourin were first and second stars of the game, with Erik Bradford picking up the third star selection.

The Generals return home to the General Motors Centre, as they host the division leading Belleville Bulls for the Millwork Rona Teddy Bear Toss Night! Puck drop is at 7:35pm.
