PORTLAND, ME - The Maine Red Claws, presented by Unum, today joined with Mercy Hospital to donate free sneakers to area kids. "The Great Sneaker Giveaway" took place at the Boys and Girls Club of Southern Maine this afternoon with the entire Red Claws team assisting more than 200 area kids in the shoe fitting, who then tested out the new shoes in an informal shoot around with the players on the Boys & Girls Club's newly refurbished court. The 207 children who attended the event were pre-selected through the Boys & Girls Club and Mercy Hospital, including groups from the Riverside Park and Kennedy Park neighborhoods.

The Red Claws Foundation and Mercy Hospital will donate a total of $20,000, including the 207 pairs of sneakers distributed today as well as gym refurbishments and fitness equipment at the Boys & Girls Clubs' Portland Clubhouse. Equipment will include a rolling gym floor covering, gym wall padding, basketballs, uniforms and pinnies for Boys & Girls Clubs' basketball league, kick balls, indoor footballs and more. The Maine Red Claws, through the Maine Red Claws Foundation and in partnership with Mercy Hospital, the exclusive health care provider for the Red Claws, raised the funds through their Best Shot for Youth program. The sneakers were provided at discount Dick's Sporting Goods. This project is a continuation of one that begin this fall when NBA D-League Cares, Bona US, the world leader in hardwood floor care and maintenance, and the Maine Red Claws completed a gym floor refinishing at the Clubs' Portland Clubhouse.
