Rebels Defeat Raiders 6-1

The Rebels sought to build on their momentum after an exciting 2-1 home ice win over Swift Current one night earlier. But it certainly wouldn't be easy against the Prince Albert Raiders, who came into this one sitting atop the WHL Eastern Conference standings.

"¨"¨FIRST PERIOD

"¨"¨The first ten minutes of this game went by without either team getting a whole lot of scoring chances. A fantastic play by Cory Millette led to the home side opening the scoring. Starting from centre ice, Millette darted into the Raiders zone, stopped, executed a pretty toe drag, then fed a wide open Wyatt Johnson who was camped out by the goal crease. He tapped the puck past Luke Siemens for his second goal of the season and a 1-0 Rebels lead."¨"¨

The Rebels would double their lead before the end of the opening stanza. Matt Bellerive took a feed from Rhyse Dieno in the Raiders zone then spun and fired from the top of the faceoff circle past a screened Siemens. Bellerive's bullet shot earned him his fifth goal of the season. 2-0 Rebels after twenty minutes of play. Red Deer outshot Prince Albert to the tune of 20-9."¨"¨

SECOND PERIOD"¨"¨

The Raiders found their way onto the score sheet just over four minutes into the second frame. Shane Danyluk found the loose puck amidst a scramble in front of the Rebels net. He went top shelf just under the crossbar for his fourth goal of the year. Davis Vandane and Chance Braid with the assists on the goal which made it a 2-1 game.

"¨"¨But the Rebels restored their two goal lead in fairly short order. Siemens got caught out of position allowing Haydn Fleury to score his second of the year into a wide open net. Tyson Ness and Matt Bellerive with the assists. 3-1 Rebels at the 5:40 mark of the period."¨"¨

The Rebels would take a three goal lead thanks once again to their newest forward. Rhyse Dieno with his second second point of the night, also his second goal in as many games since joining the team, made it 4-1. Joel Hamilton and Turner Elson earned the assists on Dieno's powerplay marker at 14:46."¨"¨

THIRD PERIOD

"¨"¨The Rebels would pull away from the Raiders in the final frame. Tyson Ness would score their fifth goal of the night, his seventh of the season, with an absolute rocket of a shot from the faceoff dot. No chance for Siemens, who would get the "˜mercy pull' from the Raiders net. Hamilton and Bellerive with the assists on goal which came at 11:06.

"¨"¨With Rylan Parenteau getting his first taste of WHL action in relief of Siemens, Conner Bleackley fired home his third goal of the season, if off of a Prince Albert defender, to make it a 6-1 game. Fleury and Underwood would get the assists at 12:23. The Rebels cruise to a 6-1 victory while outshooting the Raiders 50-28 in the process.
