Winterhawks Earn 5-2 Win over Medicine Hat Saturday

Taylor Leier and Ty Rattie had two goals apiece as the Portland Winterhawks (17-4-1-0) defeated the visiting Medicine Hat Tigers (11-12-1-0) 5-2 Saturday at the Rose Garden in front of 7,119 fans.

Portland opened the scoring 6:45 into the game on a power play when Leier collected a pass at the side of the Tigers' net and lofted the puck over netminder Marek Langhamer's shoulder to make it 1-0. Just over a minute later, Medicine Hat tied the game at 1-1 on a goal by Cole Sanford. Portland outshot the Tigers 21-6 in the period, but the score remained 1-1 going into the second.

The Hawks dominated the first half of the second period, and their efforts finally paid off at the 10:32 mark when Rattie followed a rebound and banged it past Langhamer to make it 2-0. They extended the lead at the 13:41 mark when Chase De Leo found himself stickhandling with room to roam in the Tigers' zone, eventually snapping a shot that found the back of the net to make it 3-1.

Then late in the period with time running out, Leier took a feed from Oliver Bjorkstrand in front of the net and scored his second of the game with just 1.1 seconds remaining in the frame to give the Hawks a 4-1 lead going into the third.

Medicine Hat's Miles Koules scored 56 seconds into the third to bring the Tigers within two, 4-2, but midway through the frame Brendan Leipsic fed a pass across the front of the Tigers' net to Rattie, who fired it into an open net for his second of the night and a 5-2 Hawks lead, which would end up as the final score.

Brendan Burke earned the win in net for Portland, stopping 24 of 26 shots. Langhamer took the loss with 48 saves on 53 shots.

Leipsic had two assists to extend his point streak to 10 games, including eight multi-point games in a row. He has nine goals and 14 assists for 23 points during his point streak.

Portland was 1-5 on the power play and 1-1 on the penalty kill.

The Winterhawks are back in action Wednesday when they host the Vancouver Giants at 7 p.m. at the Rose Garden.
