Admirals Back at Scope to Face Conference Leaders

NORFOLK - The Norfolk Admirals return to Norfolk Scope Arena this weekend to square off against the Eastern Conference-leading Springfield Falcons on Friday and Saturday nights.
The Admirals are coming off a four-game road trip that saw them go 1-3-0-0. Last Wednesday, November 7, the Admirals fell to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, 4-2. Last Saturday, Norfolk surrendered the game's first four goals and lost to the Binghamton Senators, 4-2. The following evening, Falcons goaltender Curtis McElhinney stopped all 35 Norfolk shots as Springfield shut out the Admirals, 5-0. On Monday afternoon, Kyle Palmieri scored twice and Patrick Maroon sealed the victory in the fifth round of the shootout as the Admirals closed out the road trip with a 5-4 win over the Albany Devils.
This weekend, Norfolk will look to avenge Sunday's 5-0 loss in the only games played between Norfolk and Springfield in Hampton Roads during the 2012-13 regular season. The puck drops at Scope between the Admirals and Falcons on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday at 7:15 p.m.
STANDINGS UPDATE
At 7-5-0-0 (14 points), the Admirals are tied for second place in the East Division and tied for sixth place in the Eastern Conference.

Eight teams in each conference shall qualify for the 2013 Calder Cup Playoffs. Following the conclusion of each team's 76-game regular season, the three division winners in each conference will be seeded 1-3 (in order of regular-season points) and the next five best teams (in order of regular-season points) will be seeded 4-8.

ADMIRALS' LOG
- The Admirals are 5-1-0-0 at home; this includes a four-game winning streak to open up the year (tied for the longest in the AHL this season).
- Norfolk has not lost any game that has gone to overtime, picking up one overtime win and two shootout wins on the young season.
- From Nov. 7-11, Norfolk lost three consecutive games for the first time since Jan. 6-10, 2012 (0-2-1-0).
- Sunday's 5-0 loss at Springfield was the only time the Admirals haven't scored at least two goals in a game this season.
- When scoring first, the Admirals are 7-1-0-0; when surrendering the first goal they are 0-4-0-0.
- Norfolk ranks seventh in the AHL in shots per game (31.67) but is last in shots allowed per game (34.83).
- Norfolk is perfect when leading after two periods at 5-0-0-0. Monday's win in Albany gave the Admirals their first win when trailing after two periods this season (1-5-0-0).
- Peter Holland and Kyle Palmieri each have point in all six home games this season.
- Kyle Palmieri is currently on a home five-game assist streak, tied for the longest in the league. He has notched seven assists during this streak.
- Nate Guenin is tied for third in the AHL with a +10 plus/minus rating and tied for first among defensemen.
- Sami Vatanen is tied for fifth in scoring among defensemen and is tied for eighth in rookie scoring with 11 points (2g, 9a).
- Luca Caputi (1g, 4a) has points in three of the last four games he has played
- Jay Rosehill (434 PIM) passed Mike Brown (430 PIM) for third place on the AHL Admirals all-time penalty minutes list with four penalty minutes on Saturday at Binghamton. Rosehill trails second-place Ajay Baines (456 PIM) by only 22 PIM, but trails first-place Shawn Thornton (1,198 PIM) by 764 penalty minutes.
- Last weekend, the Admirals recalled defenseman Nick Schaus from the team's ECHL affiliate, the Fort Wayne Komets.
- The Komets (7-3-0-1, 15 points) rank second in the ECHL's North Division and are tied for fifth in the ECHL's Eastern Conference. Anaheim-contracted forward Josh Brittian is tied for the team lead with six goals and is third with nine points.
SCOUTING REPORT
- The Admirals play the Springfield Falcons on Friday and Saturday nights at Scope. These two teams met last Sunday in Springfield. The Falcons downed the Admirals, 5-0. Springfield is the NHL affiliate of the Columbus Blue Jackets.
- The Falcons are 2-1-0-0 on the road this season. Norfolk is 5-1-0-0 at home.
- Springfield's record when scoring first is 7-1-0-2.
- Springfield is perfect when leading after two periods (7-0-0-0).
- Springfield is outscoring its opponents, 17-3, in the first period. Their 17 goals are tied for the most first period goals scored in the AHL this season. Their three goals allowed in the first period are the fewest allowed in any regulation period by any team in the league this season.
- Springfield scored four goals in the first period on Sunday against Norfolk.
- The Falcons are eighth in offense (3.42 goals per game) and second in defense (1.58 goals allowed per game in the AHL).
- Springfield had a three-game winning streak and a seven-game point streak (5-0-0-2) snapped in a 2-1 loss at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Wednesday.
- Curtis McElhinney is tied for the league lead in wins on the season (8) and leads the league in shutouts (4). He is second in goals-against average (1.36), second in save percentage (.954), second in minutes (661:47) and third in saves (308).
- Springfield has four of the top 10 plus/minus leaders in the entire AHL with Jonathan Audy-Marchessault (+11) ranked second and Ryan Johansen, Tomas Kubalik and John Moore each tied for fourth at +10.
- Add in Norfolk's Nate Guenin (+10) tied for fourth, as well, and five of the top 10 plus/minus leaders in the league will be playing in this weekend's set of games.
- Springfield's John Moore and Norfolk's Nate Guenin are tied for second in the league in plus/minus among defensemen (+10).
- On Sunday against Norfolk, Cam Atkinson tied the league high for assists in a game this season with four; three of those assists were on the power play. It also tied an AHL Admirals franchise record for assists by an opponent in a single game.
- Former Admirals captain Ryan Craig (2009-10) is captaining Springfield this season.
- The Admirals have many former Falcons on their squad. Nate Guenin, the Norfolk captain this season, was an alternate captain in 2010-11 for the Falcons. Other Admirals that once suited up for Springfield include Troy Bodie (2007-08), Matt Smaby (2006-07) and Jay Rosehill (2005-07).
