Trenton Titans News Release

The Trenton Titans looked to get back to their winning ways last week with a three-game stretch against Reading - the continuation of five consecutive meetings with the Royals.

The week ended on somewhat of a positive note, as the Titans fell in their first OT/Shootout game of the year, but still they finished 0-2-0-1 against Reading. Coupled with a home loss to Toledo two weeks ago, the Titans (5-6-0-1) are on a six-game winless streak after starting the season 5-1, and finished their five-game run with the Royals at 0-4-0-1. Despite the setback, they are still in third place in the Atlantic and within reach of the Royals.

In Game One on Friday the playoff-type atmosphere picked up from the previous week as the Royals took a 2-1 win in Trenton. After a Yanick Tifu goal early in the second, Bryan Haczyk answered back at 1:07 of the third to tie the game. But a Kirk MacDonald blast from the top of the right circle less than two minutes later proved to be the difference.

Niko Hovinen took the loss in relief of Scot Wedgewood, who was injured in a second period collision and didn't return for the third.

The playoff intensity continued the next night in Reading, but unfortunately the winning continued for the Royals as well, as they won their five straight with a 4-1 decision over Trenton.

Two first period goals inside the first four minutes, coupled with another in the final minutes, gave Reading a 3-0 lead that wasn't challenged the rest of the game.

Reading added another goal in the second before the Titans would answer back. Pier-Olivier Morin scored his first professional goal on the power play at 10:37 to finish the night's scoring.

Game Three - the fifth in a row with Reading - saw Trenton finally get the first goal of the contest. Unfortunately for the first time this year that first tally didn't lead to a win, as a late Reading goal forced overtime and eventually led to a 4-3 shootout win for the Royals.

Andy Bohmbach was the individual star of the day, netting a hat trick for the Titans. His first two goals - a PPG in the first and a SHG midway into the second - gave Trenton its first two-goal lead since the third period against Toledo October 26th.

Reading flipped the momentum to draw even at 2-2 to close the period. Bohmbach retaliated at 8:33 of the third but redirecting an Eric Baier blast from the point to put Trenton back up, 3-2.

However Ian O'Connor found the back of the net at 18:18 but putting back the rebound from a Denny Urban shot to force overtime.

The Titans - the aggressor most of the night - continued to force the action in OT and nearly ended it early, but a Bohmbach backhand in tight just missed the top right corner.

Trenton went down 2-0 in the shootout into the fourth round, when Haczyk forced a final round by beating Philipp Grubauer on the forehand. The titans weren't as fortunate in that round as Grubauer made the final save to end the game.

Hovinen made 26 saves, but suffered his fourth consecutive loss since winning his first pro start, and third straight to Reading.

The (Re)View From Atop Mount Olympus

Relief Effort In The Wake Of Hurricane Sandy: The Titans are grateful to the members of Titans Nation who provided - and continue to offer - relief supplies for those in need following the devastation left behind in Hurricane Sandy's wake.

The Titans continue the help our neighbors in need and will keep delivering donations as they come in. Trenton would like to thank its friends at Justin's Rentals in Trenton, for supplying the transportation needed to deliver those donations.

Celebrating A Silver Anniversary - Twice: The Titans have killed off their opponent's last 25 power play chances. They have also stopped the Royals from converting on the man advantage in their last 25 opportunities.

60-Plus Minute Men: With Sunday's OT game in Reading, Trenton is the last team in the Eastern Conference to have played on overtime game.

Until We Meet Again: Finally done with this five-game stretch, the Titans and Royals don't play again until they alternate home games (Trenton has two) right after Christmas, December 27-29.

Finally A Fresh Face: Trenton has yet to see its other divisional foes - Wheeling and Elmira. The Titans will travel to Elmira for two (November 16-17) and see the Nailers for a single in Wheeling November 28th.

Early Bird Gets The Point: Even though it fell in a SO, Trenton has scored a point in every game it has scored first (5-0-0-1). The only time the Titans have trailed in those games was when the SO ended in Reading.

Can't Be Late To The Party: Trenton has given up the first goal of the game six times. In those games the Titans are 0-6 and have never led in any of them.

Unlucky Number Seven: Going back to last year, the Titans are 0-7 in shootouts.
