York Revolution News Release
The York Revolution bashed their way to an early lead, and let the bullpen hold the fort in a 7-5 win over the Sugar Land Skeeters in front of 3,651 fans at Sovereign Bank Stadium on Thursday evening. The win shrinks York's magic number in the Wild Card race to 11 games, as the Revs embark on a seven-game road trip beginning on Friday evening at Southern Maryland.
Revs starter Corey Thurman (12-3) became the third pitcher in Atlantic League history to record 50 career wins, but relied on his offense and bullpen on a night where he had to battle his way through five innings.
Sugar Land grabbed a first inning lead on an RBI double to left-center by Ofilio Castro, though for the third straight night, the team that scored first did not win.
York struck back to go up 2-1 in the bottom of the first. With two outs in the inning, Joe Thurston slammed a solo homer to right tying the score, after which Andres Perez doubled, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a throwing error to give York its first lead.
Steve Moss homered to left leading off the second for Sugar Land, tying the score at 2-2. The Skeeters then loaded the bases with no outs in the third, but only scored one run on a Jason Lane double play grounder, taking a 3-2 lead.
The Revs went ahead with four runs in the bottom of the third, enjoying the biggest inning of the night. Perez connected on his 20th home run of the season, a three-run shot to left-center to give York a 5-3 lead. Chris Nowak went back-to-back with Perez, adding to his league-lead and club single-season record with his 28th long ball of the year, also to left-center, increasing the margin to 6-3.
Castro doubled to left-center, driving in two more runs in the top of the fourth, cutting York's lead to 6-5.
The Revs answered back as Brandon Haveman lined an RBI single to center in the bottom of the fourth, giving the Revs a 7-5 lead.
Thurman worked around a one-out double from Moss in the fifth to toss his only scoreless frame of the night, hanging around long enough to earn the victory, despite being charged with five runs. His 12 wins this season are one shy of matching his own club record of 13 victories set last season.
York received scoreless innings in relief from Yunior Novoa, Stephen Penney and Adam Thomas to carry the lead into the ninth.
R.J. Rodriguez allowed a pair of leadoff singles to Josh Pressley and Lane before an error plated an unearned run, but with the tying run at second and still no outs in the ninth, Rodriguez bounced back to retire the next three hitters in order, including strikeouts of Aaron Bates and Matt Hagen to secure his 12th save, and 30th of his Revs career, adding to his team record.
