Peoria Chiefs News Release
Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs beat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 7-3 Monday night at Peoria Chiefs Stadium for their third consecutive win. The victory puts the Chiefs at 27-36 in the second half and 62-70 on the season with seven games remaining.
The Chiefs were able to get on the board against Chad Pierce in the bottom of the fourth. Tim Saunders started the inning with a single and out later, Jorge Soler was hit by a pitch. With Chadd Krist up, Saunders and Soler attempted a double steal and the throw from Cameron Garfield went into left field to bring homer Saunders to make the score 1-0. Jacob Rogers stepped up to the plate with Soler on third and he launched a 0-1 pitch deep into right field to put the Chiefs up 3-0. Wes Darvill reached on an Adrian Williams error and Yaniel Cabezas followed with a single. After a double steal by Darvill and Cabezas, Bijan Rademacher had a two-out base hit to drive in Darvill to increase the lead to 4-0.
In the top of the fifth, Wisconsin responded. After Starling Peralta retired the first 12 Timber Rattlers batters, Garfield led off with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. Garfield moved to third on a Nick Ramirez ground out and Mike Garza hit a sacrifice fly to left field to bring him home and cut the Chiefs lead to 4-1.
The Timber Rattlers cut the lead in half in the top of the sixth. Chadwin Stang singled to start the inning and Max Walla lifted a fly ball to center that Pin-Chieh Chen lost, and it dropped for a triple to bring home Stang and the lead was 4-2.
Peoria got a run back in the bottom of the sixth on a controversial play. Rogers and Cabezas both drew walks and with two outs, Rademacher singled on a ground ball to left field. Rogers slid into the plate to avoid the tag and was called safe but Garfield disagreed and was ejected from the game with the Chiefs leading 5-2.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Chiefs added some insurance. Dustin Geiger collected a one-out single and Soler doubled off reliever Stosh Wawrzasek to put two in scoring position. Krist lifted a deep fly ball into left center to push the lead to 6-2 as Geiger scored. Rogers followed with a single to left to drive in Soler and the lead grew to 7-2. The Timber Rattlers added a run in the top of the ninth on a Lance Roenicke sacrifice fly scoring Garza to make it 7-3 but Bryce Shafer bounced back to strikeout Adrian Williams to finish the ball game.
Peralta (5-8) earned the win with six innings on two-run baseball. He allowed three hits and two walks while striking out eight. Luis Liria threw two shutout innings with two strikeouts and one hit allowed. Shafer allowed one run and one hit with a strikeout in his only inning of work.
Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Jacob Rogers (1B) - Rogers led the Chiefs offense Monday as he hit his second homer in as many days and collected three RBI. He now has seven RBI in his brief Chiefs career and his average has climbed from .185 to .257 in the past two ball games.
