
Birds Fail to Rally in the Ninth

ABERDEEN, MD- IronBirds notch one run in the bottom of the ninth, but fail to bring in the tying run before falling to the Brooklyn Cyclones in the first of two games. Birds doubled the Cyclones' hit total but fall 2-1.
IronBirds fell behind 1-0 in the third inning following two scoreless innings for both teams. Cyclone 2B Richie Rodriguez scored on an error by IronBird 2B Creede Simpson. 3B Dimas Ponce grounded LF Julio Concepcion into a force out at second, but reached first on the error.
LHP Lex Rutledge made the start for the IronBirds and departed after three innings and tying his season-high four strikeouts. Rutledge allowed only one hit and one run.
After struggling in the fourth, RHP Jaime Esquivel showed off his arm and retired the Cyclones in order at the top of the fifth. Esquivel then let up a solo home run to 1B Jayce Boyd (3) in the sixth inning.
RHP Jose Nivar closed the game for the IronBirds, and allowed no hits in his two innings. Nivar struck out two and allowed one walk.
Brooklyn rode the 2-0 lead until 1B Cameron Edman scored the first run for the Birds in the bottom of the 9th on an error from LF Concepcion. Hernandez made a base running error from second, forcing Edman home when Concepcion made the error.
Birds picked up three doubles tonight from 3B Torsten Boss, pinch hitter Chase Weems, and 1B Cameron Edman.
With the most wins in the New York Penn League, Cyclone starter RHP Rainy Lara pitched six scoreless innings against the Birds, only allowed three hits, one walk, and struck out four batters. Lara (8-2, 3.10) picked up the win for the Cyclones while Lex Rutledge (0-2, 6.35) took the loss. Cyclone Tyler Vanderheiden notched his tenth win of the season.
The IronBirds and Cyclones will finish the two game series on Tuesday August 28th. RHP Branden Kline (0-0, 7.50) will start off for the Birds, while Brooklyn will turn to RHP Luis Cessa (3-4, 2.66). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Coverage will begin on the IronBirds Radio Network at 6:50 p.m.
