BURLINGTON, VT --- A return home to historic Centennial Field could not break the Vermont Lake Monsters out of their current slump as the Connecticut Tigers got a three-run double in the first inning for the early lead and went on to a 7-4 New York-Penn League victory on Monday night to hand the Lake Monsters their ninth straight loss.

The Tigers loaded the bases with two outs in the first on a single, hit batter and walk before Edgar Corcino crushed a 2-2 pitch from Vermont starter J.C. Menna to the centerfield wall for a 3-0 Connecticut lead. The Lake Monsters got a run back in the fourth on an Austin Booker RBI infield single, but Connecticut responded with two runs in the top of the fifth on a Danry Vazquez RBI double and run-scoring wild pitch for a 5-1 advantage.

Vermont, which entered the game hitting just 1-for-13 in August with the bases loaded, got a two-out three-run double of its own from Chris Bostick in the sixth to cut the deficit to 5-4 after the Lake Monsters had loaded the bases on a walk, Reynaldo Mateo double and hit batter.  But Connecticut scored unearned runs in both the seventh and eighth innings to stretch the lead back to three at 7-4.

Carlos De Los Santos went 3-for-5 with a run scored for Connecticut (30-36), while Vasquez was 2-for-5 with two runs and the RBI double. Efrain Nieves (1-1) allowed the three inherited runners to score in the sixth, but then tossed 3 1/3 hitless innings with fours strikeouts for the win.

Bostick was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three RBI, while Menna (0-9) allowed five runs on six hits with two walks and seven strikeouts to take the loss. The nine straight defeats are Vermont's longest losing streak since the Lake Monsters dropped 12 in a row early in the 2003 season.

Vermont (27-40) will look to get back in the win column on Tuesday at Centennial Field when they wrap up the quick two-game series with Connecticut. The first 500 fans to Tuesday's game will receive a free bobblehead doll of 2008 Lake Monsters pitcher Brad Peacock.
