Iowa Cubs News Release

Des Moines, IA - The Cubs defeated the RedHawks 4-1 in a pitcher's duel at Principal Park to even the series at two on a soggy Saturday night. Ty'Relle Harris tossed six-plus innings of one-run ball on four hits. The California native struck out six RedHawks (70-64) and walked one to pick up his second win with Iowa (53-82). 3B Diory Hernandez drove in three of the Cubs four runs.

Matt Tolbert ended the top of the third with a dazzling dive to save a run with Jimmy Paredes at third. After flashing the leather, the shortstop led off the bottom half of the inning with a frozen rope up the middle. Harris sacrificed him to second and Adduci moved him to third with a groundout to second. Dave Sappelt (2-for-4) knocked in his 52nd RBI with a two-out single to left to bring home Tolbert for Iowa's first run.

Iowa's offense threatened in the fourth, but could not cash in with the bases loaded. Greg Rohan dunked in a double to center to begin the frame. With two outs Brian Esposito was hit by an Oberholtzer offering and Tolbert was intentionally walked to load the bases. Harris could not help his own cause though, striking out to end the potential rally.

The Cubs added an insurance run in the sixth with some small ball. Rohan ripped a single, Frazier knocked a double and Hernandez cracked a sacrifice fly to deep center to pad the lead 2-0.

Harris retired ten straight, sprinkled with two more Tolbert web gems, before surrendering a lead off walk in the seventh. Mike Hessman followed with a line drive double off the wall in right to score Matt Downs, cut the Iowa lead in half and chase Harris out of the game. RHP Miguel Socolovich made his I-Cubs debut from the bullpen and retired the next three batters in order to strand the inherited tying run at second.

LHP Jeff Beliveau entered in the eighth and tossed a perfect frame. The lefty has been lights out since returning to Iowa, not allowing a hit since being optioned. The Cubs offense strung together four straight hits in the bottom of the frame against reliever Garrett Mock. Hernandez continued to haunt his former team, blasting a two-run home run into the suites in left field adding to the Iowa lead. The I-Cubs' infielder is now hitting .423 against his former organization. Tolbert (2-for-2, 2 IBB) roped a single to right putting runners on the corners after an Esposito double, but would not score again.

Jairo Asencio pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his fifth save. Brett Oberholtzer hurled 6.2 innings and allowed two runs on seven hits, but suffered the loss.

Iowa plays the final home game of the season tomorrow with a 1:05 start against Oklahoma City for a southpaw showdown. LHP Chris Rusin (8-8) takes the bump for the Cubs facing off against LHP Rudy Owens (0-3). Catch the Pre-Game On-Deck Circle at 12:45 p.m. with Deene Ehlis and Randy Wehofer.
