Dayton Dragons News Release
Bowling Green, Ky.-Yorman Rodriguez blasted a grand slam home run to break a 3-3 tie in the seventh inning to lift the Dayton Dragons to an 8-4 victory over the Bowling Green Hot Rods on Friday night. The win gave the Dragons a 4-3 record on their seven-game road trip against the top two teams in the Eastern Division.
The Dragons took a 1-0 lead in the third when Jefry Sierra reached on an infield single, went to second when Juan Perez was hit by a pitch, and scored on Sammy Diaz's two-out single. Bowling Green scored two in the bottom of the third to take a 2-1 lead, but the Dragons answered in the fourth when Nick O'Shea doubled past the left fielder to drive in Juan Silva from first with two outs to tie the game. Bowling Green scored one in the sixth to take a 3-2 lead.
The Dragons took command of the game in the seventh. Yovan Gonzalez reached on an error to start the inning and scored all the way from first base on a double by Jefry Sierra to tie the score at 3-3. Juan Perez reached on a bunt single and Sammy Diaz walked to load the bases. After Joe Terry popped out, Rodriguez drilled the first grand slam homer of the 2012 season for the Dragons, a long drive over the left field fence to make it 7-3. It was Rodriguez's fifth homer of the year.
The Dragons added one more run in the eighth when Gonzalez doubled and eventually scored on Diaz's two-out single to make it 8-3. Bowling Green closed out the scoring with one run in the eighth.
Dragons starting pitcher Ismael Guillon worked the first five and two-thirds innings in his second Midwest League start since coming up from Billings. He allowed eight hits and three runs with two walks and five strikeouts. Lucas O'Rear replaced Guillon and was outstanding. He retired all four batters he faced, three on strikeouts, over one and one-third innings. Sean Lucas pitched the eighth inning, allowing one hit and one unearned run. El'Hajj Muhammad worked the ninth, allowing just a walk with one strikeout.
The Dragons collected 13 hits. Sierra was 3 for 4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Rodriguez was 2 for 5 with four RBI. Diaz and Silva each had two hits.
The Dragons (26-32) return home to battle the West Michigan Whitecaps (31-29) on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. in the opener to a four-game series and the start of the Dragons final homestand of 2012. Great Lakes will follow West Michigan into Dayton for a three-game set. On Saturday, Jacob Johnson (2-5, 5.29) will start for Dayton against West Michigan's Brennan Smith (3-4, 3.45).
