High-Scoring Affair Goes to Renegades, 8-7

The IronBirds lost a crazy back-and-forth battle in the series opener with the Hudson Valley Renegades. The 8-7 defeat for the IronBirds featured 23 hits and 5 errors between both clubs. The loss saw the IronBirds erase a six-run deficit as they batted around in the seventh, but it was not enough as Hudson Valley took game one of the three game set.

The Renegades struck first in the bottom of the first inning, taking a 1-0 lead. An RBI single from Richie Shaffer brought home Joey Rickard to get the scoring underway. Hudson Valley left the bases loaded in the first as Jorge Rivera managed to strike out Leonardo Reginatto to end the inning.

Hudson Valley added to their lead in the fourth inning, started off with a leadoff double by Luke Maile. Advancing to third on a Reginatto single, Mail scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Michael Williams. The Renegades extended their lead to 6-0 with a four-run fifth inning. With Mark Blackmar relieving IronBirds' starter Jorge Rivera, the Renegades took advantage of the new pitcher. RBI singles from Luke Maile and Joel Caminero brought home two runs, and an error from CF Anthony Vega allowed two more runs to come home.

Renegades' starter Taylor Guerrieri exited after five scoreless innings. Guerrieri did allow runners to reach scoring position in four of his five innings, but he stranded or retired the runners on the basepaths in each instance. Guerrieri finished his five innings, allowing just three hits and striking out a season-high seven batters.

Ian Kendall entered the ballgame and the IronBirds offense came to life. A Creede Simpson solo home run brought home the first run for Aberdeen, ending Hudson Valley's consecutive scoreless innings streak at 37. Torsten Boss and Joel Hutter hit back-to-back singles, with Boss scoring on a Tommy Coyle error to make it 6-2.

The Renegades added one more in the sixth as Jake DePew drove home Charles Epperson on a fielder's choice back to the pitcher. The IronBirds began their rally in the seventh with one out. Hector Veloz got his first hit as an IronBird with a double. With the bases loaded, Ian Kendall hit Creede Simpson with a pitch, plating Will Howard. Torsten Boss then drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 7-4. Joel Hutter hit a pop fly into shallow right field. 2B Tommy Coyle misplayed the ball, allowing it to drop and for Vega to score. After a Sam Kimmel walk loaded the bases once again for the 'Birds, Cameron Edman picked up two RBIs with a two-run single to tie the game at 7 runs apiece. However, the Renegades responded in the bottom of the frame to retake the lead. RF Charles Epperson drove in Leonardo Reginatto with a RBI double into left field to bring the score to 8-7 in the Renegades' favor.

The IronBirds could not mount another comeback in the eighth or ninth innings as Ryan Garton closed it out for Hudson Valley. Garton picked up his fifth save of the season. Jose Molina got the win, improving to 3-1, and Jose Nivar picked up the loss, falling to 2-2 on the season.

The IronBirds will take on the Renegades for the second game of the series on Saturday, August 25th at Duchess Stadium. Aberdeen will send RHP Brady Wager (0-2, 4.86) to the mound, while Hudson Valley will counter with RHP Eduar Quinonez (7-2, 3.40). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Coverage on the IronBirds Radio Network will begin at 6:50 p.m.
