Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
TROY, NY ---ÃÂ The Vermont Lake Monsters tied a team-record with six doubles on Friday night, but continued to struggle at the plate with runners in scoring position and a pair of home runs by ValleyCat Jarrod McKinney led Stedler Division champion Tri-City to a 7-4 victory in New York-Penn League action at Bruno Stadium,. Vermont has now lost six straight games for the second time in the last 15 contests and the Lake Monsters have lost their last 10 road games.
Five Lake Monsters had a multi-hit game as Vermont collected 14 hits, but the Lake Monsters were just 3-for-16 with runners in scoring position (6-for-53 during six-game losing streak). In addition Vermont had two runners cut down on the basepaths on base hits, grounded into a double play and left 10 runners on base for the night.
Brett Vertigan went 3-for-5 with two runs, two doubles and a triple, but was also thrown out trying to stretch a double into a triple to leadoff the seventh inning. Vertigan is the first Vermont player with three extra-base hits in a game since Justin Miller had three doubles at Mahoning Valley July 9, 2010. The six Lake Monster doubles tied the single-game team record, which was done eight previous times with the last six-double game June 28, 2011 at Lowell.
Vermont got off to a good start in the first inning as Austin Booker led off with a single and two outs later scored from third on a John Wooten single to center. But the ValleyCats scored three runs with two outs in the bottom of the second as McKinney connected for a two-run home and Neiko Johnson had an RBI triple two batters later to score Ryan Dineen.
Vertigan led off the third with a triple and scored on a Chris Bostick RBI single to cut the deficit to 3-2, but McKinney hit a solo homer in the fourth to get the run back. Tri-City added three more runs in the fifth, including RBI singles for Preston Tucker and Tyler Heineman, for a 7-2 lead. Bruce Maxwell had an RBI single to score Chris Bostick in the seventh, while Vertigan doubled and scored on a Wooten groundout in the ninth.
Vermont starter Brent Powers (0-6) allowed six runs on five hits with four walks in four-plus innings to take the loss. Booker, Bostick, Jacob Tanis and Miguel Marte each had two hits for Vermont (27-37), which is 10 games under .500 for the first time since 29-39 during the 2010 season. Reliever Jamaine Cotton (1-2) allowed one run on four hits with four strikeouts over three innings to earn the win for Tri-City (46-18), which has won 16 of last 21 games and earlier this week clinched the Stedler Divison title.ÃÂ
Lake Monsters and ValleyCats will play the second of the three-game series at Tri-City on Saturday starting at 7:05 pm. After the series finale at 5:05 pm on Sunday, Vermont returns home to historic Centennial Field for a quick two-game homestand Monday and Tuesday against Connecticut.
