Lowell Spinners News Release
LOWELL, MASS. - The Lowell Spinners scored six runs in the fifth inning to overcome an early four run deficit in their third consecutive win, topping the Connecticut Tigers Friday night at LeLacheur Park, 7-6.
Connecticut (28-35) jumped out to an early first inning lead. Jake Stewart walked to lead off the game, advancing to second when Jared Reaves reached on catcher interference. A sacrifice bunt advanced both runners and a passed ball would score Stewart to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. After a strikeout, Tyler Hanover came through with a two-out, infield single to score Reaves and put the Tigers ahead, 2-0.
Lowell (31-33) would cut the lead in half in the bottom half of the inning with a bit of two-out scoring of their own. Deven Marrero doubled to right-center with two out, stealing third base and Mookie Betts singled up the middle to score Marrero and cut the deficit to one, 2-1.
The Tigers would extend the lead back to two in the third. Back-to-back singles by Reaves and Danry Vasquez to lead off the inning got things started. After Haley struck out Pat Smith, Francisco Taveras came in from the bullpen and Reaves came around to score when Jake Davies couldn't snag Betts throw, allowing Reaves to score and the Tigers to extend the lead to 3-1.
They would add to the lead in the fifth inning when Stewart, who singled to lead off the inning, stole home on a double steal and a Hanover RBI single to push the Tigers ahead, 5-1.
The Spinners however would erupt offensively in the bottom half of the inning. Matty Johnson led off the frame with a walk and a Mike Miller double put two in scoring position with no outs. Marrero singled up the middle, scoring both me, cutting the lead to 5-3. After a pair of outs, Matt Marquis worked a five pitch walk amidst some confusion on-field as Marrero stole third and came around to score on a throwing error by catcher Bennett Pickar. Following the Marquis walk, a Dreily Guerrero single advanced Marquis to third and Aneury Tavarez reached after taking a pitch to his back. After Joe Rogers came on from the pen, Roberto Reyes delivered an infield single that the Tigers threw away, allowing both marquis and Guerrero to score. Another fielding error led to another Spinner run and a 7-5 lead.
Connecticut would pull within a run in the sixth inning on a Stewart sacrifice fly, but Taveras and Braden Kapteyn shut them down for the final three innings to preserve the lead and another Spinner win.
Marrero led the Spinner offense with a 2-for-5 night, swiping his 23rd and 24th bases of the season while driving in two. Betts and Reyes each added two hit nights and an RBI, with Betts reaching base three times.
Haley struggled, reaching his pitch count after just 2.1 innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits and a walk, striking out three. Taveras (5-2, 2.14) followed, allowing three runs on five hits and a walk, striking out six over 4.2, while Kapteyn extended his scoreless innings streak to 14 innings, picking up his sixth save of the season with two hitless innings, striking out three.
The Spinners go for their fourth consecutive win Saturday evening for Pirates Night at LeLacheur Park. The Pirates will be on hand to meet fans, while one lucky fan will win a Royal Caribbean Cruise courtesy of Garavanian Travel and Royal Caribbean! Mike Augliera gets the ball for a 7:05 first pitch.
