Erie SeaWolves News Release

The Erie SeaWolves desperately needed a jolt if they were going to snap a seven game losing skid. In front of the largest crowd since August of 2009, Patrick Cooper delivered a career performance to help Erie to a 5-2 victory.

The 6,743 that came to Jerry Uht for Buck Night saw Patrick Cooper pitch seven scoreless innings en route to his first win since mid-July. Cooper only gave up five hits while striking out a season high eight batters, lowering his season ERA to 4.89 in the process. Cooper was supported by an early onslaught of Erie scoring.

Erie chased Akron's starter TJ House out of the game after the first inning. Jamie Johnson, Niuman Romero, and Nick Castellanos all walked to open the inning. Jordan Lennerton's fielder choice plated Johnson and singles from Garcia and Bishop plated two more to put Erie ahead 3-0. Tony Plagman ended the scoring in the first with an RBI double to put Erie up 4-0.

Erie would add an insurance run in the fourth with some controversy. Tony Plagman led off the inning with a double and Brandon Douglas followed up when he was hit by a pitch. When McCann struck out, Plagman and Douglas ran on a double steal. Akron's Chris Tremie was ejected arguing the play on Plagman at third. Jamie Johnson would walk to load the bases and Romero would walk home Plagman to extend Erie's lead to five.

Akron would make it close in the eighth when Tyler Stohr walked the first three batters he faced to load the bases. Chris Cron called in Michael Morrison, who would walk the next two batters to bring Akron within in three. Robbie Weinhardt was called in and gave the SeaWolves a momentous save. Weinhardt struck out the side to complete a streak of nine straight strikeouts going back to his last appearance. Weinhardt would allow two Aeros to reach base in the ninth, but struck out Chun Chen to finish the game and give Erie the 5-2 victory.

The SeaWolves and Aerosare back in action tomorrow (Tuesday, August 21) when Ramon Garcia takes on Toru Murata.
