Peoria Chiefs News Release

Grand Chute, WI - The Peoria Chiefs committed two errors in the first inning and never recovered, falling to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers and rehabbing MLB pitcher Shaun Marcum 8-1 Monday night. The loss ends a two-game winning streak and puts the Chiefs at 21-35 on the half and 56-69 overall.

The Chiefs gift-wrapped a three-run inning for Wisconsin in the bottom of the first with Joe Zeller on the mound. Chad Stang led off with a grounder to short that was initially ruled an error on Tim Saunders but later changed to an infield hit. Stang stole second and moved to third when Max Walla reached first on an error by Zeke DeVoss at second. Stang scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Brandon Macias and Walla scored when Jorge Soler committed an error in right field on a single by Ben McMahan. With two down Greg Hopkins made it 3-0 with a double to center and two of the three runs were unearned against Zeller.

The Chiefs got hits against Shaun Marcum in the second and third innings but could not score. Tim Saunders singled with two outs in the second and was left at first. DeVoss doubled to center with two outs in the third by Marcum retired Pin-Chieh Chen to end the inning.

Wisconsin added to the lead in the third inning. Macias singled with one out and McMahan launched a two-run home run over the center-field wall and into the Chiefs bullpen. The blast, his 12th of the season, put the Rattlers on top 5-0. The Rattlers added another run in the fourth when Rafael Neda doubled with one out and scored on a single by Yadiel Rivera.

The Chiefs finally got to Marcum in the fifth. Jacob Rogers drew a one-out walk and scored easily on a two-out double down the left-field line by Bijan Rademacher. The opposite field double cut the Rattlers lead to 6-1 and marked Rademacher's fifth double as a Chief.

Wisconsin got that run back in the fifth as McMahan singled and moved to third on a single by Nick Ramirez. Hopkins made it 7-1 with a RBI groundout before Zeller finished off the inning. Wisconsin added an unearned run in the seventh against reliever Willengton Cruz. Macias tripled to right-center with one out and as McMahan walked, Macias scored on a passed ball. Cruz walked two but escaped the inning with the Chiefs down 8-1.

Zeller (2-4) allowed seven runs, five earned, on 10 hits over six innings. He took the loss and struck out one. Cruz allowed one unearned run on one hit and two walks in one innings. Luis Liria allowed a hit and a walk in one shutout inning.

In his third, and likely final rehab start, Marcum (1-0) allowed one run on four hits over six innings. He struck out three and walked one with 71 pitches thrown. Jacob Barnes, who was the original Monday starter, piggybacked Marcum and earned his third Timber Rattlers save with three shutout innings.

Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Zeke DeVoss (2B) - DeVoss doubled and singled on the night while going 2-for-4. DeVoss is now batting .333 in August with nine extra-base hits, 10 walks and 14 runs scored in 18 games.
